The paint is worn and peeling from the old tattered gate
Scarred from years of service being mistreated and abused
The handle is covered with grime and rust that destroys
The hinges are squeeky and can barely manage to move
Wood that is rotting away with each passing day
Weathered and beaten it's beauty has long since passed away
Time has managed to take it's toll upon the fence that surrounds
Wearing down the barrier of protection applied so long ago
Mold and mildew grow so prevelently with the humid air
Giving character and charm to the gate so worn and old
The wisdom of every thing in the earth broadens over time
Giving comfort if one would only look past the outer shell
Search underneath the surface of bitterness and hurt
What things will be discovered? One can never tell.
