I'll make this quick--and come back later for more in depth study. BUT--there are three kinds of covenants in scripture.
1. Commanded
2. Agreement
3. Promised

1. The ten are "commanded" (dah) !! In other words--you don't have to "agree" with God to keep them--He just simply COMMANDS you to obey them!!
2. Now there were many "agreement" types in the OT--Mt. Sinia was one of them. "Alll that the Lord hath spoken, we will do"
3. The Promised type ALWAYS comes from God to man AND animals. ie--the "Rainbow Covenant" was given to ALL creatures of the world. God PROMISES NEVER to destroy th earth with a flood again. (Ge 9:13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.)

But the GREATEST of all the PROMISED covenants is the GOSPEL!!! It's called the EVERLASTING Covenant and it was between the Father and the Son. *** 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
And as you can see from the text--it was began in HEAVEN BEFORE there was a man to enter into that agreement with Them. Jesus had promised the Father that if man should fall--he would be given a second chance at eternal life thru the merits of the LIFE and SACRIFICE of Himself!!!!!!!!! Glory be to GOD for such a LORD as this!!!

This is a great topic!!!!!!!!

Thank you, honorthesabbath, for that clear explanation of the biblical covenants. I hadn't looked at it in quite that detail before.

In regards to the 2. Agreement type of covenant, I've had discussions with people who did not seem to know the Old Covenant (specifically Moses ceremonial law) was an agreement made between God and the children of Israel. If I may expand on the verse you cited:
Exodus 9:
3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

When one looks up the definition of the word "covenant" we find the following:
1 : a usually formal, solemn, and binding agreement
2 : a written agreement or promise usually under seal between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action

When we read the above account from Exodus 9 what we find is this series of events;
1) Moses goes up the mountain where God then outlines the provisions of the potencial agreement (verses 3-6),
2) Moses then comes down the mountain and presents those written words to the elders (verse 7),
3) the elders agree to it (also verse 7), then
4) Moses returns up the mountain with the people's answer (verse 8).

Clearly, this matches the #2 dictionary definition very nicely. This is where the Old Covenant was established, here in Exodus 9, and it is exceedingly clear that it was an agreement between God and the children of Israel. Now, one thing I want to point out for it is an ever important detail in this text; is there any talk of "commandments" as being part of this agreement? No. In fact, the Decalogue wasn't even written by the finger of God until Exodus 32! As such, they could never be part of the agreement - they stand alone.

When the Old Covenant gave way to the New Covenant this could not have affected the Decalogue for it wasn't even part of that first agreement/covenant. As honorthsabbath made clear in her post, they constitute a commanded covenant and thus an agreement with man on them was/is not a prerequisite.

Christ is our Savior, but He is also our Lord - those attributes cannot be seperated from one another. However, most seem to want a Savior but not a Lord. To them I have to answer, sorry, it just doesn't work that way.

Jesus sealed the new covenant with His blood. Just like Moses sealed the first one with the blood of animals, Christ sealed the second by shedding His blood.

Matthew 26:28 - For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

I have a few other verses, but I'm at work and I don't have time to look them up right now (and I don't have the scripture memorized unfortunately).

PaleHorse, somewhere in our religious research folder is an essay I wrote about Old and New Covenants, but I don't think I finished it. Would you mind looking for it? It has some great verses on this subject.

Jeremiah 31:33 - But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Amen!
Its the same law (the Ten Commandments) only now it is written in our hearts (for we do His commandments because we love Him). The law did not change, only the place it which it was written.

Amen and AMEN, PaleHorse. It gives me chills when I read, "it is written in our hearts". For one thing, that should mean never FORGETTING the covenant, and certainly, never LOSING the covenant or forgetting what it means because we carry it WITH us wherever we go.

Our Lord is more awesome than our puny minds can even begin to understand. We just accept Him and all that He's done and continues to do for us with humble hearts.

What I have trouble with is, anyone who claims they are christian and believes in our Lord, saying we simply are covered by grace now, and the Lord just whisked away with his death, those pesky old ten commandments..."we couldn't" keep them anyway. ?????????????????? They obviously don't know the same Lord and Savior that I do. And as far as not being able to keep His commandments? They might as well say "we can't love Him" anyway.

This is very sad to me. The thought of ANYONE, let alone myself, having my precious savior look at me and say, "I don't know you" is just about more than I can handle. But I truly fear there are many who ARE going to hear those words. Lord, forgive them.

Awesome topic, Neveradullmoment!

I hear ya, Sassy. I always think upon these verses whenever I hear the "we couldn't keep the commandments anyway" excuse:

Matthew 7:12-23 - 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

One of the striking things in these verses is found in verse 22. They weren't doing the will of the Father.

That takes to a very important and intelligent question; what is the will of the Father?
(I have the verses that tell us this answer but I want to see what others think first - so I'll wait to post them.)

But getting back to the Decalogue point about us not being able to keep them:
1 John 5:3 - For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 14:21 - He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 15:10 - If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
Revelation 14:12 - Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Revelation 12:17 - And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony ofJesus Christ.

I don't know, maybe its just me, but it seems like we are to keep them even if we don't think we can. And if we fail at any point what do we do? Confess, repent, ask for forgiveness and be justified by the atoning blood of Christ.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 - Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Bingo! And Amen! You answered the question I posed in the above thread. thanks Honor.
The Father's will IS His law. There a bunch of verses that reinforce this fact but the one Honor posted is one of the best (IMHO).

Do you ever hear that the Sabbath was only part of the Old Covenant?

What did God tell us is the New Covenant? And how did Christ seal it?

This is my favorite discussion.

I have heard from non-SDA's that the Sabbath was part of the Old Covenant.

Click here for a very good summary on the Covenants.
