I see that Godzilla vs. Megalon is on the list. I thought there were copyright issues with that episode and they couldn't sell it on DVD?

Its still available on the secondary market. If you want it in new condition, it will cost you.

Actually both Collection Volunes 9 & 10 were yanked from the shelves in stores for legal reasons related to Godzilla and Women of the Prehistoric Planet.

Oddly, the reason Toho was upset with the Megalon disk was due to the T-Rex on the cover of the collection. It did not properly represent the Godzilla character. That does not mean they would have been okay with any other packaging though...

Why on earth did they put that picture on there though? Doesn't look a thing like Godzilla. Wouldn't putting a picture of the King of Monsters on the front look better and get people to notice it more than some random dinosaur?

Toho Studios is notoriously protective of their franchise. To use an actual likeness of Gojira/Godzilla definitly requires licensing fees. I'm sure Rhino wanted to avoid those. Toho has lawyers in the US they keep on retention for this reason.

Licensing of the individual movies being riffed in the MST episodes also presents a problem and is the chief reason one wil never see full-season collections of the program released. Licensing is the reason you do not see the show in re-runs on TV either.

Watched a few MST3K episodes last night. One of them was Robot Monster, and all I gotta say is, I think Ed Wood would be proud.

I really enjoyed the show when it was on, and noticed a few of the episodes were streaming on Netflix now so I think I'll be checking them out.

I have been working my way through the first season and that is the latest 1st season show on DVD.

You can still tell they're working out the rough edges for the show, but most of the stuff that would come to make the show enjoyable are there. I think the riffing becoems a little more constant later on perhaps.

I'm no expert on the show and only fell in love with it when it was over.

Robot Monster is the earliest episode of the series I have seen and so far, the only episode I’ve seen where Kevin Murphy did not play Tom Servo’s voice. I knew some other guy had played him early on in the show, but I’d never heard his voice till then. It was okay I guess, but nowhere near as good as Kevin Murphy.

Something like that. I know Plan 9 is supposed to be the worst movie ever made (though I would not have said that even before seeing Robot Monster), but I found this one to be so far worse. I can understand why Ed Wood’s movies were so bad; all he cared about was getting the film shot as quickly as possible and getting it released. Now I don’t know much about the production of Robot Monster, but I couldn’t imagine it was as bad as Ed Wood had it.

Also, Plan 9, in theory, is not that horrible of an idea. Robot Monster on the other hand, is about a giant gorilla robot with a space helmet on. I burst out laughing every time I saw Ro-Man; Joel and the bots didn’t even need to riff.

Let me know about this "worst movie ever" business once you've seen Beast of Yucca Flats. The fact it has "yuck" in the title should give you a clue. I recommend the Shout Factory! release of this one. There are a couple of great Coleman Francis (director) mini-documentaries on the disk.

I watched the MST3K episode of it last night and, yeah, it probably was worse that Plan 9 or Robot Monster. Still, I'm not sure if I'd say it's the worst movie I've seen, because I can be a little more forgiving of old B-movies. New B-movies on the other hand I rarely will try and make excuses for.

Yeah, I'm very forgiving of old B-movies. I like them a lot.

One of my favorite sub-genres is the space opera. There is something about adults sitting in office chairs in plywood sets droning endlessly in pointless dialog while traveling through imaginary space, that does it for me.

I'm not the sort of fan who resents riffing though. Have you met those? There are folks so defensive of the Godzilla franchise, for instance, that they get mad when you talk about the MST episodes in which those films were skewered. I like them riffed as well as unriffed.

But don't get me started on Godzilla, I love suitmation in general and Godzilla especially.
