And it's funny that no-one considers themselves racist. I mean, some of my best friends are...not like me.
Can a person be racist and not know it? Can a person not be racist and yet perceived as such? (rhetorical questions)

I was raised in a blatantly racist home and I learned early in life from that bad example and vowed to myself at an early age that I would not have that mindset nor pass that mindset on to my future children.

I think we should continuously scrutinize ourselves about the matter .... as far as society in general goes .... I don't know if it will ever be totally stomped out (has been going on for hundreds of years world-wide) ... but certainly room for a lot of improvement and we should pursue that.

Time will tell.

There's nothing wrong with learning math .... if the parents are unable to help them with math and the child is struggling learning it ... then
additional help with that should be sought out. Math in itself is not emotional.

Tell people "math is not emotional" to those who struggle to learn, but anyway.

My point is that parents also complain about the materials used and methods used to teach fundamental subjects. If we have parents opting their students out of history, we can't really stop them opting out of math or language teachings they don't like. (All of these are important.)

This is true ... parents should be able to view ALL materials presented in the class room and be able to opt their child out .... without reason or consequence. I'm older .... this was available when I was in school .... those who were opted out went to study hall (teacher present for help) oddly enough most got their homework done there and had more free time when they got home.
So parents can just decide to opt their kids out of entire subjects? Kids deserve a full education, including subjects their parents aren’t comfortable with because of their own biases.

"dumb as rocks" ???? Perhaps their talents lie elsewhere ... I know my grandfather only had a 3rd grade education .... could not even read .... and back then when electricity was first coming out .... my grandmother would get books from the library and read them to him and he was able to wire the farmhouse. Also, he had a wood and metal lath and was very proficient in using them. He repaired lawnmowers ... and actually made parts for them from scratch. Turned wood and made some beautiful things.

It is true the education system has a lower rate of successful learning than we would like to see.

Just because a child may not grasp some things shouldn't be defined as "dumb rocks".
It's not about not grasping things it's about not being taught things.

After review, Ruby Bridges will be allowed to enter the elementary school.

Review board allows Ruby Bridges movie to be shown at elementary school after parent complaint

Before the vote, the eight-person committee of teachers, parents, community members and a library media technology specialist watched the film and reviewed the objection form as well as the school district policy, the district said in a statement.

The parent who filed the complaint was invited to speak to the committee but did not attend Monday’s meeting, the school district said.
