Not the atom bomb or an institution that helps moronic sociopaths achieve power but.............

If that is true, one could design a shoe that has conductive contacts inside the shoe connected to those on its sole.

If I am going to run, I prefer to have "toe boxes."

What utter garbage. I say taht as someone who on occasion does enjoy hiking Maori style.

And right now even for me it can get 'interesting' walking the 10 feet from the pool to where the deck is shaded.

Though it could be worse, they could encourage people to spend a lot of time near high voltage powerlines to pick up all the free electrons!

I would have said scissors. It appears those who run with scissors have been weeded out by natural selection such that all we have left are couch potatoes.

ESD shoes (sort of) work on the same principle.

The scientific veracity of this thread however can be summarized as follows.

Shoes... or sandals?
Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

The only tested benefits I'm aware of for barefoot (or minimal sole) walking, besides toughening & strengthening the foot & ankle, is a beneficial effect on balance due to the enhanced proprioceptive feedback. Walking on uneven ground is beneficial (within safe limits), and doing so with greater sensation is even better.

IIRC homes for the elderly in China & Japan often have small-cobbled paths in the grounds to help improve the balance of occupants and so reduce the likelihood of falls.

Cartilage growth/repair is extremely slow due to the lack of blood supply, but there's some evidence of benefit for the stimulation of cartilage metabolism, which can aid growth and repair, due to repeated minor impacts of running or jogging. This suggests that barefoot walking could have a similar effect. Just for the pleasant sensation, I regularly walk and jog in Leguano 'barefoot shoe-socks' and find that pain from my dodgy knees (particularly on stairs) has improved over the 2 years I've been doing it. Not scientific, but I like to think the two could be causally connected...
