• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I'm really new to exploring this world of depression, I hid within my feelings for so long that I have quite a road ahead of me.

But as I research, definate medical tests for depression seem to be vacant.

I guess as I go down this road, just how do we tell the line between feelings that we have to just move past and conditions that require medicine.

I'm not against medicine in general, but my doctor today says its pretty much an experiment.

Is my doctor full of it, if not, then what ever came up with the knowledge for what medicine does?

I do not see how being a guinea pig is going to help my negative moods.

What do you see in the mirror?

What do you think is causing the moods?

What medication works for each person is very very different. Your doctor will look at your symptoms and based upon that they make a very educated guess about what nuerotransmitters are being effected and that helps them select a medication. If that medication works, they found the right one.

However, sometimes a medication does not work that the doctor really believed would work. That may be because the problem is a combination of inbalances with many different neurotransmitters. Sometimes a second medication is needed, or sometimes a different medication is needed.

Some medications help the depression but have side effects that the doctor wants to avoid so they try other medications without those side effects first to see if they will work well enough so you don't have to have those side effects.

So, basically, it doesn't sound l like your doctor is "full of it" but is practicing normal medical procedures.

If your doctor feels you need medication, please take it exactly as prescribed. One of the problems with finding a medication that works is when someone isn't taking the full amount or is not taking it daily, etc but doesn't shar this information with the doctor.

Medication for depression can take up to six or even eight weeks before they take their full effect. Be patient and totally honest with your doctor in this process.

If you need meds do take them. Your doc is right it is Experimental but it has worked on many lives. So for me trust your doc. It may take time to find the right meds. But do keep intouch with your Doc. Do not give up and trust your doctor meds do help but it is hard to find the right one to work. I am praying for you

The medicine will definitely help your mood. And, if you do have issues that you need to work on and move past, taking the medicine will make you better prepared to address those problems. Sometimes when you are in the midst of depression you have this gloomy haze that makes you unable to properly assess your current situation. The medicine helps lift that haze and makes you much more able to clearly see and resolve your problems, if there even are any.
