Shubee, I simply stated that Jesus was unassuming. He was
unassuming in His demeanor. He did not impose Himself, not
even on His followers. Now you claim that I have put the
character of Jesus in a false light by stating that He did not
go out of His way to make sure that everybody understood
that He was the Son of God?
Here is an example of what I meant by Him being unassuming.
The following took place at His trial.
"'Are you the Son of God?' they asked with one voice. He said
unto them, 'Ye say that I am.' They cried out, 'What need we
any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of His own
mouth.'"
This was the third time they had pressed Him hard with the
question, "Are you the Christ?" "Are you the Son of God?"
He had remained silent until He finally said unto them, "Ye say
that I am."
Now to me, this shows that He was indeed unassuming.
In John 6:25-66 He was teaching His disciples who were very slow
to learn and ready to forget. He was teaching them a spiritual
lesson about His relationship to them, that He was the bread of life,
that unless they ate His flesh and drank His blood both physically
and spiritually they would perish.
In the Desire of Ages, p.660, the words of Jesus in John 6:53 are
quoted. "Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink
His blood, you have no life in you."
Then we read the explanation: "This is true of our physical nature. Never
one, saint or sinner, eats His DAILY FOOD but he is nourished by the body
and the blood of Christ."
Therefore, "The light shining from that Communion service in the upper
chamber makes SACRED the PROVISIONS for our DAILY LIFE. The family
table becomes as the Table of the Lord, and EVERY MEAL a SACRAMENT."
Idem,660.
How is it that we are receiving His life in the provisions for our daily life?
"It is the Word of God, the impartation of His life, that gives life to the seed;
and of that life, we, in eating the grain, becomes partakers. This God desires
us to discern; He desires that even in receiving our daily bread we may
recognize His agency and may be brought into closer fellowship with Him."
Education, 108.
"It is His life that we receive in the sunshine, in the pure, sweet air and in the
food which builds up our bodies and sustains our strength." Education, 197-198.
More can be said on this aspect of John 6:53 but it will suffice for now.
And then the words of Jesus are quoted and explained so far as our spiritual
nature is concerned:
"And how much more are Christ's words true of our spiritual nature. He declares,
'Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life.' It is by
receiving the life for us poured out on Calvary's cross that we can live the
life of holiness. And this life we receive by receiving His Word, by doing those
things which He has commanded us." Idem, 660.
"The Words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit and they are life." John 6:63;
12:50.
For "In every command and in every promise of the Word of God is the power,
the very life of God, by which the command is to be fulfilled and the promise
realized. He who by faith is receiving the word is receiving the very life and
character of God." Christ's Object Lessons,38.
Much more could be said on this topic but that will suffice for now.
