  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you chose to do this, it should delete everything off of your iPod. I'm not positive about this though.
How glad am I for not clicking 'Yes'!

I am immensely enjoying the video feature I must say, except when I downloaded D.O.A. off Archive.org it crashed my iPod after about 20 minutes of watching it. Then I had to wait for the battery to run out so I could switch it back on a recharge it. So apart from that, it's going great!

In other iPod news, I think my battery is about to go. I'll fully charge it, and the battery will go dead just a few minutes after displaying half charge.

In other indie news, I've recently discovered The Mountain Goats and Will Oldham. I wish I'd been listening to them for years.

All Hail West Texas is my favorite, even though Tallahassee was my first. Finally got to see Mr. Darnielle earlier this year. It was great. I felt like a a teenage girl at a Britney concert. People would not stop yelling out song requets, and he was just so magnetizing and funny.

I knew you had mentioned them as being a favorite in the past, so I bought "Zopilote Machine" on a whim. Looking back, I wish I had purchased their three compilation albums as well. Would your reccommend those, or "All Hail West Texas" and "Tallahassee" next?

I think Tallahassee is more emotionally engaging. Backstory: if you look throughout the MGoats discography, you'll see a lot of songs titled with "Alpha" in the name. All of these songs are about the Alpha Couple, and their story of a relationship going continually downhill. Tallahassee is a concept album about the Alpha Couple and their trip to Florida where they try to finally mend their relationship, but ultimately and inexorably divorce.

But All Hail West Texas is much more melodic (and includes the cult favorites "The Fall of the High School Running Back" and "The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Texas"), and is important in that it's the last recording made by a crappy boombox, not in a fancy studio with Vanderslice at the mixer.

Will Oldham is great! I assume you're aware of his Bonnie 'Prince' Billy moniker?

Yeah, that Kanye record was good, but not THAT good.

I must admit LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective, Deerhoof, Antony & the Johnsons, M.I.A., and Art Brut being in the top ten made me pretty excited. Then when I saw where Sufjan was I shrieked with delight (not really, but I could have).

Although, I'm a little surprised at how far back the New Pornographers are. I thought Twin Cinema was better than alot of other things th.t made the top ten.

Yay for Sufjan! Too bad a lot of really good albums didn't make the list. And Kanye at #2? I'm not sure about that one...
If you haven't noticed, Pitchfork has become very loving of the rap/hip-hop in the past two years. Especially in regards to Kanye, Talib Kweli, and Ghostface Killa.

In regards to your avatar : please. please. please. stop trying to be like me.

Edit: OMIGOSH!!! ART BRUT IS #3!!! *does spastic not unlike that of Ohlala from Space Channel 5*

haha. Dang, I want a kick*** avatar of Vick getting his face smacked.

Oh, and I was more or less appriciative of the Pitchfork top 50. A lot of crap didn't make the list that I thought would, and while there were albums on there I didn't think should have, there were definitely some surprises.

I was surprisingly un-enraged by Pfork's year-end list. I was actually just happy that Bloc Party didn't get into the top ten.. and that Jamie Lidell was on there. The only thing that would've made it perfect would be if Akron/Family made it.

And the Top 50 Singles list was good too. Much better than Stylus', whose list for 2004 was really good.

Yeah, I actually purchased Superwolf, so it was under Bonnie "Prince" Billy. What a great album. Is "I See a Darkness" better?

Everyone will tell you yes, but I don't see it at all. I think Superwolf is absolutely great, one of the top 5 albums of the year; I See a Darkness did nothing for me really... it's more melodramatic, maybe, and calmer, but not much more emotional. Superwolf is more cathartic, for my money, and the better album for it.

As for Pitchfork's list, I agreed with a good bit of it. Akron/Family, Andrew Bird, and the Eels are the only ones that got left out that really should have been on there -- I think those three are in the top 10 overall. I also would've liked to see Sigur Ros and Six Organs of Admittance somewhere in the top 50... but I don't really care that much. As long as Sufjan's #1.

Tiny Mix Tapes' list had some of those in their top 25.

They also had Animal Collective's Feels at #1. Frankly, I can't blame them, every time I listen to that album I find something new to enjoy. Just like Sung Tongs, I keep growing to love it more and more. If we're really being honest, Feels is much more musicially complex than most other records, Illinois included. I'm glad they are getting some recognition for it.

And I still can't believe Sufjan got #1 on Pitchfork's list. I keep thinking about the doors that that opened for the Arcade Fire and I am happy that Sufjan is finally going to get the attention that he deserves, but I'm also sad because I'm going to miss that intimate feeling I get when I listen to his records knowing that a vast majority of people out in the world have never heard how beautiful this sounds.

Then again, The Rapture was #1 in '03 and no one knows what happened to them now, so I guess it could go either way.

True story : One time this past spring, I was stuck in traffic on my way to school and listened to "Echoes" and "Funeral" back to back.

The guy I happened to date at the time didn't understand the immense significance of such an event.

Right now, I'm enjoying them nearly equally. I find "Nomadic Revery (All Around)" very moving, but Superwolf has moments that come close ("Beast for Thee", "I Gave You").

Other than Sufjan being pushed back to #7, I enjoy the top 25 from Tiny Mix Tapes moreso than Pitchfork's. I was a bit surprised that the Game found a spot in the top 50, but Caribou, Bright Eyes, and Six Organs of Admittance could not.

I'm still trying to decide how I really feel about Cripple Crow. Devendra really doesn't do much for me as a lyricist, and I think his delivery was more adventurous and fresh on Rejoicing in the Hands, Nino Rojo, and Black Babies. Then again, "Chinese Children" was a really cool track.
