  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Sure there is...

What happened to your User Name? Are you the "CFer Formerly Known As white_frog914" now?
I'm the "CFer known as white_frog914 whose username used to be black but now it's silver" Like whoa.

I'm a defender of the older straightedge kids. You know. The real ones. The ones that don't drink anything but water, are usually vegan, and don't take medication. If I was able to do all that (I kind of have to take medication or I'll be dead by 30...) I'd totally do it. Also, I know that for my 21st birthday I'm celebrating by buying myself a case of Smirnoff Ice (which will probably last me a year...). Mmm...

:edit: ASS. That is all.

On a slightly more indie note (although, asses can be totally indie [and indie kids can be total asses]):

I just got back from seeing Iron & Wine and Calexico play in Boston. I wasn't even planning on going (mostly because I have a lengthy essay on Moby Dick as Religious Criticism due), but some guy I barely known called me and said he had an extra ticket and was wondering if I wanted it. So, not one to pass up free tickets and trips to Boston, I went.

Tim Fike opened the show. He was sort of electronica/hiphop/pop/dance. It was fun, but nothing too great. I only saw the last three songs of his set.

Next Calexico played an hour-long set. They were really, really tight. I didn't hear any mistakes or anything in the harmonies or music. They played with video footage of horses and flowers in the background because everyone loves horses and flowers.

Then, some random Mexican (and I don't mean that in a derrogatory way, he really was from Mexico) named Salvador played three songs for some reason. He wasn't on the bill. He was just there. He made clicking noises with his mouth. And played guitar.

Then Iron & Wine set came. It was fun to see all the people who were real fans of his music and who were fans of Garden State. Some people behind us kept yelling "Such Great Heights" after each song. They also dropped about twenty drinks throughout the night (i'm not sure if they were done with the drinks or if they were clumsy [or ****drunk]). Anyway, Sam Beam was great. He played new and old stuff. The old stuff on acoustic; the new stuff (woman king, jezebel) on electric with a backup band. He also did a Velvet Underground cover. I like the Velvet Underground.

Then Calexico joined Sam on stage and they played through the songs from the EP. I love the harmonies when they are all together. At some points there are four-part harmonies and they are completely in tune live, which is pretty impressive. Then they played a two song encore and that was the end.

It was a marathon. All together it was a little over 3.5 hours. But it was free. And it was Boston. And it was Iron & Wine and Calexico. So I'm glad I went.

Oh. I just discovered something right this very moment. Your user name is now the same color as my background. That's why I couldn't see it and mistakenly thought you'd gone incognito. Or something...

I dunno. I wouldn't do the straightedge thing anymore simply because I have only recently discovered my true freedom in Christ. I used to be so legalistic about everything, and I was a bitter and unhappy Christian.

Now I know I can drink a few beers, watch "Saw", and play drums with my band(s) in bars without compromising my faith, and it's a wonderful thing.

I'm on meds, too. I hate them for what they do to me, but, I have to have them right now, so, it is what it is...

not at all. except for the 15 year old kid who's all militant about how 'edge' he is, until he turns 21 and discovers that his age no longer prohibits him from drinking.

Right on. I remember seeing an anti-drug commercial a few years back that featured some edgers prowling the mall, gleefully saying to themselves (I'm paraphrasing), "Man, look at all these pathetic, smoking, drinking, meat-eating-dope-heads. I'm so much better than them, thank God. Anybody who needs to drink or smoke is a useless turd." Then they'd high-five each other as they laughed.

Arrogant little buttmunches...

to me it seems like the whole "edge" thing is 10% conviction, 90% show. For instance, in highschool I wasn't a drinker, smoker, or drugger. But I would have said you were out of your mind if you asked me to put the "straightedge" label on me. Straightedge seems to take away from conviction and makes it a fashion.

Agreed. SxE kids can be some of the most elitist pricks around. Even moreso than those who post in the music section of decapolis. :p But yeah, I pretty much completely agree with this:

That's all it is for much of the scene, IMO.

And veganism as a whole cracks me up. Not because of what it is, but because there are very few people who claim to be hardline vegan that actually are.

I can understand wanting to not eat meat for health reasons or whatever... but to not eat meat because of how animals are treated is pretty ridiculouls. I mean, have you watched animal planet recently? I don't think the lion was being very "humane"

Um, the meat industry in America is incredibly inhumane. I'm not veg. and this is still very apparent.

How do you know that vegans are True Vegans? In my experience, the vegans I know are very hardcore about it. It's a very spiritual thing for them.
