I hate how indie is now a genre...it no longer means independant...:-/

Anyways. Now I will list some bands I'm not sure are what they consider 'indie' nowadays, because I'm terrible at putting music into genres and I'm sure some have already been mentioned, but I don't feel like reading through 32 pages.

I feel the same way, indie should never have become a genre. It's not supposed to be, but what you have going on is a bunch of posers wanting to claim the ethic without really adhering to it.

Some good bands there, namely Belle and Sebastian, The Features, Hot Hot Heat, The Kills, and The Secret Machines.

Indie's not about being a genre. It's about recognizing bands for their talent and artistic aspects, rather than their adherence to some sort of musical rule or mold. Furthermore, it's about recognizing bands that are adhering to the DIY ethic, and that's just not present in some of the more popular "indie" bands. I think the big fallout of indie though was that it became cool, so a bunch of people just jumped onto the bandwagon. I prefer to think of this lot as the Indie juniors - not my term, but I like it. The same lot that was raving about Garden State because the Postal Service was on there (not because they were into the Postal Service from the start, but because it was cool to be into them).

Indie's about being yourself, but it's been mainlining (erm) mainstreaming lately. And that's a problem.

I have a seventeen year old granddaughter, and she is always playing me her music, most of which is indie or rock. I used to abhor it, but now really love bands like The Killers, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Green Day (more punk?), and a few others.

Am I hip? Have I still "got it"? My granddaughter says yes.

lol! and Deano and Boz aren't (they must be the real deal, they've got nicknames!). The Smiths were superior to the solo Morrissey, their respective legacies bear that out.

I'm not really familiar with the Features and the Kills, but I don't think I would lump Hot Hot Heat in with Belle and Sebastian and The Secret Machines. The former is pretty derivative and (based on the few new songs I have heard) dreadfully boring; the latter two are most definitely not boring (B&S's Books EP is one of the best EPs ever and Now Here is Nowhere proved that the Secret Machines were more than just band that Pitchfork was hyping up).

It's just what it sounds like. I don't know how it sounds if you have a particular British accent, but in American English it rolls off the tongue pretty easy.

oh come on, now. let's not turn this into punk. not to say that you're totally wrong or that bandwagoners aren't annoying, but still, it's just not that big a deal! music is music; let's all just listen to the good stuff and not bother with how mainstream it is or how "cool" it is to listen to it.

anyway..i saw discover america, chris staples (formerly of twothirtyeight) new band, last night, and they were really good. i bought their album, but i've yet to listen to all of it. i'm excited about owning it, though.

I'd be interested in hearing what you think of Psychology.

I've had it for a while now and I am really overdue writing up a review for it, but I can't decide if I like it or not. Part of me really wants to enjoy it (and there are times where I can see the glimpses of what made twothirtyeight great), but another part of me finds parts of it a little bland.

Eh, I don't know. All I'm sure of is that if I don't get something in writing soon Julia's going to unleash her wrath on me via angry e-mail.

I talked to Aaron from Ween the other day. I really wish he wasn't so much of an alcoholic. I'm waiting for some new Ween stuff, but with Deaner working on some stuff with the one guy from Queens of the Stoneage and Aaron just sitting around, the outlook isn't bright.
