  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just finished listening to You Could Have It So Much Better With Franz Ferdinand, and I'm not really impressed. I don't think it's as good as their debut, which I thought was incredibly overhyped as well.
Although I admire their intellectual integrity I fear that FF are a bit of a one-trick-pony. I'd advise checking out bands like Josef K as their musical forebearers.

I read on pitchfork a while back that he was doing it, but haven't actually listened to it. If you would be so kind as to send it, I'd be mucho happy!
No problem! I'll upload "Ocean Breathes Salty' as soon as I get home tonight.

Also, I still can't believe you guys aren't in massive infatuation over YCHISMB. Everytime I listen to it, it gets better. Ah well.

I do love it though, when music reviewers are reviewing an album and they get lyrics wrong. Considering song lyrics are incredibly easy to find. Such an example:

Walk Away, a sugary, twangy number complete with whiny oo-ahs in the background, sports such lyrical gems as "I am cold/Yes I'm cold/But not as cold as you are," and "The buildings will fall down (don't you walk away)/The quake will split the ground (won't you walk away)."

(taken from http://www.noripcord.com/reviews/F/franzferdinandalbum2.html)

When in actuality, the lyrics to the song are:

Why don't you walk away?
No buildings will fall down
Why don't you walk away?
No quake will split the ground

(taken from http://franzferdinand.org/lyrics/walkaway.htm)

Which is hilariously different (because it gives an entirely different meaning to the song) than what they put.

Have you guys heard about Mark Kozelek doing the CD of MM covers? I could upload a song or two if you'd like.
Are you referencing the new Sun Kil Moon cd "Tiny Cities"?

I just bought that today... my local indie record store had a good sale on it for $5 and I couldn't refuse

And even better, The Fire Engines (and even their newer incarnation, Nectarine No. 9, who have at least one superlative album).

Josef K never quite lived up to their potential, IMO. A bit too monochromatic. It didn't help that Alan Horne was a lunatic, but whatever...

I normally make "softer" mixes that I play at such times. I also like a little Nick Drake, accompanied by Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Iron and Wine, etc.

You, my friend, are awesome. I will buy this disc tomorrow. I like this much more than the original. I don't really care for MM's version of "Ocean Breathes Salty" (I know...shocking), other than the lyrics.
See...while I admire Kozelek's work; as a woman, he scares me a bit. I think if I ever saw him in the street, I'd run. Actually, come to think of it, I'd probably do the same thing if I saw Brockie. Sure I'm not 19 anymore, but I don't want to take the chance.

And with that lovely tangent, I have to ask, which version of Dramamine is better? MM or SKM?

I'd have to say MM. This disc is pretty good, but the vocals are a tad monotonous. The instrumentation is fun at times though, like the opening of "Four Fingered Fisherman", which I'm listening to now.

I think I might go to that show as well, actually. We'll have to meet up. Andrew Bird is playing there on the 19th also; I'll definitely be at that show.

Hello Indie friends. I was wondering if you guys could recommend some good indie bands or artists to me?

There are so many, it's hard to give a comprehensive list. If you're listening to Sufjan, that's a good start. As for my nominations, I'd say (in no particular order):

Radiohead
Joanna Newsom
Modest Mouse
Ween
Sigur Ros
Wilco
Yo La Tengo
Animal Collective
Built to Spill
Belle and Sebastian
The Decemberists
Devendra Banhart
Broken Social Scene

...and about 100 others. :)

Good show starting with Radiohead!

I'll add a few more:

The Futureheads
Bloc Party
Delays (if you like androgynous singers)
PJ Harvey
Interpol
Fiery Furnaces
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (an acquired taste)
The Arcade Fire
The New Pornographers
Death Cab for Cutie
The Legends
Jesus and Mary Chain (don't mess with the Raveonettes, go straight to the source)
Annie (very bubble gum pop)
MIA
Architecture in Helsinki
Caribou
The Books
Neutral Milk Hotel
Death From Above 1979
The Flaming Lips
The Go! Team
(!) Guster (!)
The Hives/The Strokes/The Vines (in order of good-ness)
Iron & Wine
Hot Hot Heat
The Libertines
Mae
Manitoba (Same as Caribou, but a different name)
The Rapture
The Pogues
The Russian Futurists
Saturday Looks Good to Me
XTC
Jam
New Order
Depeche Mode
The Smiths
Dead Milkmen

...I'm not quite spent yet, but I should probably stop...

Some of those are more essential than others.

If you haven't had a chance to get into Radiohead yet, I think you should try to make that a priority. OK Computer, The Bends, and Kid A are all pretty incredible. It may take some getting used to, but once you familiarize yourself with them and fall in love with them, it will change the way you listen to music forever.

I really need to pick up OK Computer...but alas money is not treating me very fairly lately, and the U2 Vertigo DVD comes out in like ten days...and I need to save for Christmas. But I shall make it a priority...even though I still need to buy The Mysterious Production of Eggs....too many good cds...

Here's a list of fifteen recent indie albums that you may want to look into (this might be easier to handle than a massive list of bands). All of these should be pretty readily available at any indie record store and most major chains:

1. Radiohead - OK Computer
2. Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Aeroplane Over The Sea
3. Ween - The Mollusk
4. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
5. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
6. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
7. New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
8. Modest Mouse - Moon & Antartica
9. Pedro the Lion - It's Hard To Find A Friend or Control or Achilles Heel
10. Beck - Odelay
11. Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
12. Why? - Elephant Eyelash
13. Manitoba - Up In Flames
14. The Decemberists - Her Majesty The Decemberists
15. The Avalanches - Since I Left You

A little less accessible, but very, very good:
1. Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain
2. Godspeed You! Black Emporer - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antenna To Heaven (instrumental, lots of building and layers; may take time to get into)
3. Animal Collective - Sung Tongs

This isn't a comprehensive all-inclusive list, just a few albums that I really enjoy that shouldn't be too difficult to track down.
