So your saying when Jesus said keep my commandments he didn’t mean it. He just meant try your best?
Romans 8.9 says: 'If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his'.We should read the entire chapter. The Apostles were not getting it. They could not understand "if You know me you know My Father" or "the Father is in Me and I am in my Father". Without believing in this "commandment" the Holy Spirit would have no way to enter them. I just want to clarify this so we don't widen this into a "works salvation" error.
Blessings
Please look at verse 1 ...
Paul is writing only to the "faithful" saints, not to the unfaithful ones!
Faithful saints are the obedient ones.
The NT is filled with warnings that BACs have responsibilities,
and their salvation is a co-operative effort ...
between them and the merciful God who saved them.
But, if they're not on board with His Plan of Salvation,
they have rejected it ... and will lose their salvation.
Jesus' disciples couldn't get much of anything because ...We should read the entire chapter. The Apostles were not getting it. They could not understand ...
Christians on this forum are all so helpful and kind. thanks a tonThis should cover it for you.
[8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [10] If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Great observation!Romans 8.9 says: 'If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his'.
Having the Spirit indwelling is a characteristic of a truly born again believer.
Romans at the beginning and at the end of the Epistle speaks of 'the obedience of faith' ; 'obedience to the faith'.Great observation!
So, are you saying that IF we don't love Jesus enough to obey Him,
we don't have the Holy Spirit, and we don't have salvation?
Seems that I've read that before.
So, now comes the obvious question ...Romans at the beginning and at the end of the Epistle speaks of 'the obedience of faith' ; 'obedience to the faith'.
The true believer perseveres; Romans 8 makes it clear that the true believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The true believer does not lose the Holy Spirit, either, verses 38-39 make it clear that the true believer perseveres.
Misleading title:Of course, this is not my idea … it is what John 14 says!
John 14 (NLT):
15 If you love me, obey my commandments.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.
The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him.
But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans — I will come to you.
19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live.
20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father,
and you are in me, and I am in you.
21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.
And because they love me, my Father will love them.
And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.
23 All who love me will do what I say.
My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.
24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me.
John 14 says: Having the indwelling Holy Spirit is conditional
If you love Jesus, you will obey His commandments … 14:15
If you love Jesus, Father God will give you the Holy Spirit … 14:15-16
If you love Jesus, you will obey His commandments … 14:21
If you love Jesus, Father God will love you … 14:21
If you love Jesus, He will love you and reveal Himself to you … 14:21
If you love Jesus, you will do what He says … 14:23
If you love Jesus, Father God will love you … 14:23
If you love Jesus, Father God and Jesus (and the HS?) will come inside … 14:23
John 14 says most believers today do NOT have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside
… simply because they are NOT obeying His commandments.
Does this remind you of the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3.
So, now comes the obvious question ...
Can a BAC who has been disobedient,
and lost the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit,
and lost salvation ...
can he get back in God's Plan of Salvation,
and get the Holy Spirit back,
and get his salvation back?
Meanwhile, of course, you have make it clear ...
persevering in doing what exactly?
I’m not sure why it’s so hard for people to admit they are actually giving their own opinions on what they believe scripture means.Misleading title:
The Holy Spirit dwells only in obedient believers.
It should read this way to be true....
The Holy Spirit "fills and controls" only in obedient believers.
For not so? Believers would never be able to grieve, nor quench the Spirit (who will never leave us, nor forsake us!) Many are saved. Few learn to understand it and how to exploit the grace we have been given.
Every believer receives the Holy Spirit in salvation during the church age. But, only a few will find the life the Spirit desires to lead every believer into. Many will make stuff up that sounds good to their own way of thinking, using Scripture, and take the broad and wide road to destruction instead. Taking "broad and wide" interpretations of Scripture to their own liking to heart. Its why we have over 1000 denominations. They all can not be right when each contradicts another.
IMO, the OP title matches the contents of the OP, i.e. John 14.Misleading title:
The Holy Spirit dwells only in obedient believers.
So once your saved your always saved regardless of your behavior correct? Or is the spirit never leaving dependent upon how one behaves?Seems rather irrelevant since He said He would never leave us in the first place.
Many hearty congratulations for missing the whole point of the OP.Seems rather irrelevant since He said He would never leave us in the first place.

No else seems to have done so.
Well, I don't accept the premise of a true believer having supposedly lost the indwelling Spirit Who came by the new birth. So, now comes the obvious question ...

What do you think about Galatians 5:4 ...Well, I don't accept the premise of a true believer having supposedly lost the indwelling Spirit Who came by the new birth.
