  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

NEW YORK (AP) - Peter Jackson won't be returning to the Shire any time soon. The Oscar-winning director is planning to film "The Hobbit," the prequel to "The Lord of the Rings," trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, but two studios must first fight over legal rights to the film.

Jackson said New Line Cinema has the rights to make the movie, but MGM has the rights to distribute it.

"I guess MGM's lawyers and New Line's lawyers are going to have a huge amount of fun over the next few years trying to work it all out," he told reporters recently in Los Angeles, according to AP Radio. "I'm obviously busy for a couple of years on 'King Kong' so those lawyers can just go at it for a long time."

"The Hobbit" tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, who found the ring and eventually passes it on to his nephew, Frodo Baggins. Frodo's journey to Mount Doom to destroy the ring is the basis for the "Rings" books and films.

Jackson said if he were going to direct the movie, he'd want it to feel like the rest of the trilogy. On Sunday, Jackson won an Academy Award for best director shared the adapted-screenplay award with his two co-writers for the final "Rings" film, "The Return of the King."

"I'd want Ian McKellen to be back as Gandalf, I'd want it to feel like it was part of the same mythology that we've done with 'Lord of the Rings,'" Jackson said.

"The Return of the King" swept this year's Academy Awards, winning all 11 categories in which it was nominated.

Jackson is in the middle of remaking "King Kong," due out next year, starring Naomi Watts.
According to this article Newline does have the rights to make it, but its just quarrel between them and MGM thats holding this project back.

I personally would welcome the idea of a hobbit film. Its one of my favorites, and I have faith that PJ could pull it off wonderfully.

I really feel he'd be making a mistake to make it part of their 'mythology.'
It was not written as a prequel, it just so happened to go that way. The film should be made with the same light-hearted frolicking good times as the book was - which was a children's book to begin with.
I surely hope he doesn't mean the same gritty depression of the LOTR movies. After all, he is mostly an horror flicker.

Good Point. Yeah he is mainly a horror flicker director but I think he can pull it off. I am just glad Newline and MGM are battling it out because eventually it will happen. There were also some pretty intense moments with the Orcs and Smog the Dragon and the riddles, you gotta love the riddles.

Heh! I hope he won't ruin the trilogy by adding prequals like George Lucas did to Star Wars!
I completely agree and that is my biggest argument. While Star Wars were amazing, the new ones are pathetic attempts to cash in on something that should have not happened. I think that is what Jackson is trying to do, milk it for all it has. I fear that it will totally devalue the work he's already done. He already owned the awards shows with ROTK, he should leave it at that.

I have to disagree with the comments on George Lucas's newer Star Wars movies. They were not sequels but legitimate pieces of the saga. He planned on making them for a long time and to say he was just trying to make some extra cash is ridiculous. All six were a part of his vision and he wanted to make them all, so he did. He only gets money to make movies. As far as The Hobbit goes, I'm sure he'll stick to the intentions of Tolkien. Jackson is a huge Tolien fan and a great filmaker, which is why the Trilogy was so good. Movies are about risk, and I beleive he should go for it and see what he gets.

My husband was telling me that he didnt' know why they didn't make the "HObbit first, it would set up the whole story line for people to understand Bilbo's first adventures, in the first one. I know my husband will like to hear that.

Prepare for the Prequel of Lord Of The Rings. Peter Jackson is setting up to film The Hobbit. Even casting Ian McKellen as Gandalf once again... I dunno what to think of this.

Good/Bad?

This is only a rumour.

if it's true, it's good.
