the hell Ploy

So is anyone else bothered by the hell ploy that many creationists sites try to use.

the "believe in us, and be saved and go to heaven, believe in evolution and you go to hell."

Is it just me, or is this saying, since we lack evidence we are going to make you believe using fear?

Bothered by it? It's a fallacy when used in any sort of argument--the fallacy of argumentum ad baculum, or appeal to force.

It is the hoodlum protection racket argument... "Hey, buster, nice soul ya got there...would be a *real* shame to see anything 'bad' happen to it, wouldn't it, now? You get my drift? Do ya, punk?"

It's annoying. In a christmas eve party discussion I had someone threaten me with hell because I didn't believe the earth was 6000 years old. The problem is that ifn the earth really is 6000 years old and evolution really is false than God created a world that looks exactly like it evolved. If he created a world that looks like it evolved and sends us to hell because we believe that it evolved, than he is worthy of neither our love nor respect. As such, it would be immoral to worship such a
God and choosing to burn in hell would be the only moral alternative.

Fortunately, I don't believe that I'm going to burn in Hell because I believe in evolution.

Especially considering, when was the last time you had an evolutionist threaten you with eternal torment if you didnt believe?



It just sounds like a school yard bully technique to me.

When you don't have evidence you've got to do something.

Fortunately during that debate I was able to shake his 18 year old son's faith in YEC. I think something about asking 60 or so questions he couldn't begin to answer might have had a part in that.
