You can order them from Amazon.com or Abebooks.com or other places. It depends on which edition you want two main flavors are the 1888 edition and the 1911 edition. I found this on Amazon for an 1888 edition for about 25 dollars including shipping. That is a pretty good deal. They also have 1888 commemorative editions in leather covers. But why not get the real deal.

Adventist Book Center online I'm sure would be able to get one to you.

Yes, I would check the Adventist Book Center online. They certainly have it.

I've occassionally looked for books like these on Amazon but they usually have nothing of the sort. But if RC has found it then apparently they do. But I'd still say you'd have better luck just checking the Adventist Book Center.

Most of the literature relating to Adventism and EGW on Amazon are explaining why they think we're a cult... ;)

The ABC charges way too much for shipping and handling. A lot of Adventist books are available on Amazon, and the link that RC provided includes a used copy of the 1888 GC in good condition for $15.50 plus $3.99 shipping, for a total of $19.49 (and there are several other listings as well). The ABC charges $16.99 plus $10.74 for shipping and handling, for a total of $27.73. The ABC site doesn't tell you if it's the 1888 or 1911 GC, but I would assume that it's the 1911. These are both hardcover editions; there are also cheaper paperback versions available, used and new.

I checked it out of the local public library

That would be another good option. I check things out all the time at the local public library (and by inter-library loan if my library doesn't have them) because I don't have money to buy books.

Longhair,

Just curious on how you felt about what you have read so far.

Friend mva1985,

The day I was asked to be a Mod here for the SDA forums eight or nine months ago, I asked around and I was told that this would give me the best exposure to Mrs. White's writings. I read it through pretty carefully. I found some concepts with which I agreed and some with which I did not agree. During my time as an SDA Mod, I have thought about this quite often as I read posts. I admit an imperfect understanding most likely due to a lifetime with differing cultural concepts.

LongHair, I think it's pretty cool that you did that!

It's funny because I've been Adventist for over 4 years and I have yet to read any of EGW's books. I plan to change that this summer, however.

I've noticed a strange phenomenon exclusive to our church in that if you do read her writings and agree with them (or egads...dare post a quote from one of them), people accuse you of worshipping her.

I never go with the flow anyway (in case you haven't noticed...haha) so that isn't why I didn't read her writings. I just haven't had time.

Thank you for your kind answer. I know that many love The Great Controversy. I guess I would have recommended Steps to Christ (much shorter) or The Desire of Ages.

But I definitely give you props for reading it to help in your understanding of this forum.

I'm afraid with the bickering we have not been the best example.

I found The Great Controversy to be very dense. It was hard for me to make sense of all that she was writing, so I should probably read it again once I have the courage to do so. However, I'm currently reading through The Desire of Ages, and I think that it is an excellent book. You can really tell that EGW has a nearly-unmatched reverence for Jesus which I find contagious.

My MIL brought me "Steps to Christ" and I've had several people recommend that I read that one first. I've had quite a few people also tell me not to dive right into The Great Controversy and I'm sure I'll discover why soon enough.

My family is leaving for a theme park later today and we'll be gone until Wednesday night. It's been a nightmare getting ready for this trip (although I'm soooo looking forward to it). It's consumed a lot of my time--BUT I am going to do some heavy reading when I get back.

I think I'll read Steps to Christ and then The Desire of Ages first. After that I'm not sure which book I'll dive into next.
