Hi all,

I suppose you have all heard of the Gospel of Thomas, but have you all read it? I have and found some great wisdom in it that perfectly harmonizes with the Jesus of the New Testament. To me this Gospel is actually more authentic because it doesn't try to be a synoptic, story style book. It simply is a recording of Jesus' sayings and teachings. Here is an example....

3. Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the (Father's) kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the (Father's) kingdom is within you and it is outside you. When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and you are the poverty."

Wow, this is some spectacular wisdom from the mind of Christ! I wish more would accept this familiar teaching. This passage enhances and strengthens the message Jesus was trying to convey in Luke 17:21 where Jesus said that the Kingdom of God was within us. Of course in Luke we know that Jesus was addressing the religious “leaders” of this truth because they had some serious misconceptions about the Kingdom. Yet, unfortunately that same spiritual ignorance that Jesus was dealing with then is still prevalent today! Naturally minded souls continue to look UP into the sky and out into the world when they speak of God and His Kingdom instead of within! Heaven isn’t in the sky above your head. If you believe this then you are deceived by the serpent and will follow the birds of the air. You are chasing shadows of the world. However, God’s reality is certainly ABOVE this world, but in a spiritual sense! God’s Kingdom is a higher state of consciousness and life in the Spirit of Christ! Here Jesus adds that not only is the Kingdom within you, but also outside of you. The reality of all things is spirit, so entails that God is all in all. Therefore so is His Kingdom.

Now, the second part of this verse might sound a like “New Age” philosophy, and it is! Jesus the Christ was the beginning of that New Age, if only Christians could see this. In this third saying Jesus said, “When you know yourselves, then you be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father.” A fairly well known Latin phrase is NOSCE TE IPSUM, which means KNOW THYSELF. Philosophers have said that this is what life is all about, and I have to agree. Yet there is one little caveat here; we must come to know our TRUE self. Our true self is not the person of THIS world, but the one who was born of God that came into this world. All of you Christians of traditional beliefs should read the words of the Bible more carefully. This teaching should not be foreign to you if you have been given the eyes to see it. Consider how this passage from Thomas spiritually aligns with what Paul wrote to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 13:9
For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known
.

Paul is speaking about us becoming and knowing our true, perfect self. This is nearly identical to what Jesus said: “When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father.” Do you understand the spiritual essence of what Jesus and Paul are saying here? They are saying we are spiritually maturing and growing in knowledge of who we are. We may not be clearly seeing our true self (who is Christ) right now, but we will once we come to fully know and BE our TRUE self! They are both saying that one day we shall fully know our true self, even as I AM (God) is fully known. We are God’s image that must become perfect like our Father to show God the image of Himself. This is our purpose- to reflect the glory and be the image of God! We can only do this in Christ where our true self (life) has been kept hidden and safe for ages and ages. So in this light, real “poverty” is when we don’t know our true self in Christ. This is spiritual poverty where the soul is lost in deception and the spirit feels homeless because he hasn’t returned to his Father’s house. Finally, Jesus says, “You are the poverty.” Paul said that nothing good could come from him. He said that “Paul” had died and CHRIST now lived in and through him. Paul knew that his true life was found in the spirit (in Christ), not in the natural (or worldly) Paul.

I looked up the Gospel of Thomas after watching the movie "Stigmata" because it mentions the text, and gives a short discription of the text at the end of the movie.

And it was wonderful. It hit me like a ton of bricks. It lead me to look for other gospels, that aren't in the Bible.

It is fascinating, from what I've read. It gives a much more intimate understanding of the kingdom of God as it relates to the ontological present. Plus, it's always fun to see contemporary theologians tap dance around this book.

It was labeled heretical by Early Church Fathers. Namely, Origenes Adamantius, Eusebius of Caesarea. Interesting parallels to the canonical gospels though.

Of course it was!
The Church had a lot to lose if this book was embraced by the masses.

82. Jesus said, "Whoever is near me is near the fire, and whoever is far from me is far from the (Father's) kingdom."

Fire! Run for your lives...INTO it that is! When will my dear Christian friends come to realize that FIRE is a good thing- even a divine thing! The lake of Fire is the divine combustion of God’s love! Christ is the Fire of God that Jesus lit and became who consumes the carnal nature. So all that hay and stubble in our being will be burned if we move near to Christ. Surely we have enough evidence to know that Jesus did start a holy Fire (Luke 12:49) by bringing Christ into the world (Thomas:10)? Not only is “Christ in you” the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27), but Christ is also the Fire of God in you destroying all that is unholy! It should be easy to understand why it is prophesied that this world (Hades) and all the elements (ways of the world) will be destroyed by fire. Fire is now in us burning away our natural self so that Christ may be revealed in us. Have you not read that God’s holy fire will salt everyone (Mark 9:49)? Once all the natural elements of our being have been consumed, the second death (lake of fire) will cause you no pain. You are alive in Christ and have overcome Death and Hades!

Oh yes! Amen to this! The Church was more concerned with controlling the masses with fear. They made themselves the go-between, the middle man, the bridge to get to the Kingdom. Jesus HATED the establishment of religion. Isn't this obvious? All of his condemnation was toward those using their religious smokescreen and false power to imprison the children of God. As Jesus said, they were taking in converts and then making them twice the son of hell as they were. Let the truth be known. There is nothing between man and God except Christ. And where is Christ? Christ is in His Kingdom. And where is His Kingdom. It is where ever is he is truly King! When Christ becomes your LORD and Savior then you are truly saved. Christ is not one man, Christ is every man. Jesus told us this....Paul taught this....but so few can accept this.

peace,

brad

108. Jesus said, "Whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me; I myself shall become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to him."

This is one of my favorites! Before you dismiss this as just more nonsense from an apocryphal writing, consider what Jesus said to that Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus tells this woman that he had “living water” from God. Isn’t this what Jesus is saying here too? We must drink the wisdom flowing from Jesus’ mouth if we want his divine life. When we do this Jesus says, “I myself (Christ) shall become that person.” Now that really sounds mystical; now doesn’t it? Yet, it is no different than “When you do this to the least of these, you do it to me (Christ).

It is one of my greatest desires that Christians and all the religious of the world would come to see that Christ is all in all. Jesus became Christ thereby becoming the firstborn from this world of the dead. Christ is our life and our resurrection. We don’t enter heaven as evil minds and unclean spirits. We enter heaven by living in Christ and Christ living in us. We become one with God. Paul seemed to have a grasp on this highest reality when he said, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Our old self (nature) must die so that Christ (our true, higher nature) can live.

Surely even Jesus “died” daily to his own will (Luke 22:42) and desires (James 1:14), so that God’s will would be done. Like Jesus then, we should make our self nothing (Philippians 2:7), virtually transparent, and then the light of Christ will shine from us! Again, to become like Jesus, we should drink all the divine knowledge of the truth that came from his mouth. After this, a whole new (higher) world will be revealed to us! And the door to the Kingdom of God will be opened before us!

peace,

brad

It seems that the John Gospel was written almost as a refutation of the Thomas Gospel. The John Gospel also singled Thomas the apostle out too. Thanks to John we have the phrase Doubting Thomas. But the Thomas Gospel doesn't seem to have been written by a doubter at all, but by a believer.

I have a question to everyone who find light and truth in the gospesl of Thomas.
Why, if this book is so in line with other gospels did it not make "god's holy word?" Also, if we say that men chose the books, then we must admit that it wasn't divine insipration at all but human politics. I would agree that the gospel of Thomas has much to offer but I wonder why it didn't make it and what that says in general.

Are you talking about Thomas or Luke? That part is already in the bible.

Jesus said that there will come a time that nothing will be hidden. Everything hidden will come to revelation.

And let's face it, and I don't mean to sound like a big conspiracy theorist, but the Church does try to keep certain things hidden because of power and money. But we also know that Because of what Jesus said, that these things which are kept hidden, will someday come to light.

This in no way indicates that something isn't divinely inspired, it just means that people, all people are inherently greedy.

Why is it considered heretical if it is written by one of the twelve apostles (that's the Thomas who wrote it, right?)?

Because it indicates that the Church isn't needed as a mediator between God and man.

Even if Jesus himself made these claims, he'd be nailed to a... huh... oh... that's kinda what happened.

Pharisees made the claim that Jesus wasn't related to God in any way, but to Satan, because his message made it clear that the presently established religions took away the possibility of a one on one relationship with God.
