A few days ago my sister and I were in her car, on our way to pick my nephew up from pre-school. The radio was on, set to one of those "variety" stations. The song "Caribbean Queen" by Billy Ocean came on. I cranked up the volume and felt a bit teary-eyed as nostalgia hit me. I glanced over at my sister and lamented, "I miss those days"
my sister, who is also a "child of the 80's" heartily agreed with me.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind living now, but for me, it can't compare to the 80's. I mean IMHO, the music was better, the movies were better and television was better. I can remember sitting in front of the TV with my family every Thursday night watching the NBC line up: The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Night Court and Cheers. Now, save for a few shows, I barely watch prime time tv.
It was just a more innocent time back then. Sure, there were bad things going on in the world and in America back then but it just seems like it has skyrocketed in the past ten or so years. When I played outside with my friends when I was eleven and twelve years old, I never had to worry about being kidnapped by someone or when I was in school I never even thought about being shot by one of my classmates. I didn't even think about having sex or worrying about getting a STD or getting pregnant. I was so content on being a kid. Now, sadly it seems like kids are trying to become adults at younger and younger ages.
I sometimes feel sorry for the kids of today. With all this high-tech games and such, where's the imagination? Growing up, I didn't have a computer or a gaming system, or a cell phone or ipod or what have you and me and my sister and friends had a blast using our imaginations and making up our own fun. We played board games, rode our bikes, made up plays and stories and other things.
I just remember, for the most part the 80's were are really great part of my life. Enjoyable. Happy. I wish I could go back, not to stay, but just to visit for a day or two, and hopefully bring some of that "fun and innocence" back to the present day.
blessings,
~Michele
