  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So why bother to ask ?
I didn't.
I asked if you knew anyone from the Flat Earth society personally.
You asked if going on to a Flat Earth society forum for 2 weeks counted. I said, "not really" and gave the following answer.
No, not really.

If someone came on these forums for 2 weeks they could be left with different impressions.
If they went to the General Theology board, they might think "Christians are all well educated," or they might think "don't Christians argue about petty things?"
If they went to the Controversial Theology section they might think, "Christians are very unorthodox and/or Christians never seem to agree with each other."
If they went to the Eschatology section they might think, "why are people wasting time debating when Jesus might return, when he's already said that no one knows?"
If they went to the section that covers mental and physical health, they might think "why don't these Christians believe that Jesus can heal?"
They might be surprised to find a section on Conspiracy Theories and wonder i) what place that had in Christianity and ii) why were Christians even thinking of these things.
The impressions that they formed over 2 weeks would never tell them the whole story of Christianity, Christian doctrine or the faith, and experiences, of individual Christians.

I imagine it would be the same with Flat Earthers.
That means; I would imagine that Flat Earthers might disagree with one another on a forum - and I gave the example of you disagreeing with d taylor.

I didn't ask how Flat Earthers got along with each other.

Two weeks was too long, what, with all the swearing that was going on, here is mild in comparison,
I would hope it is, as this is a Christian Forum.

You can't deny, though, that several of your threads get closed. And they get closed because they get heated and there is flaming, goading or implying that others aren't Christians. That might not always be you, or other FE-ers, who are guilty of that; some of us may sometimes get exasperated with your "arguments" and forget ourselves, or be blunter than we intended.

If there is swearing and rudeness on the Flat Earth Society forum, that suggests there is a lot of disagreement going on - either between themselves or with globe earthers who may have joined, mistakenly, in the hope of converting them.

Yes I think this is what is happening over there. But is was bit rough going for me & this is why I detest the FES.

I don't blame you for leaving due to swearing and bad language, and I'm certainly not going to persuade you to go back.
But it seems strange that you should a) say "there is very little disagreement between Flat Earthers" and a few posts later say "I detest the FE society" ('detest' is a very strong word). And b) that you say you want to get the truth out there but are not in unity with others who also want to get the truth out there.

But then, I accept the earth is a globe, so anything that any FE-ers teach seems nonsense.

It may seem all nonsense but when you really look into it, one just knows it's not.

I have really looked into it. And I mean really really looked into it. You are not the first flat earther I’ve come across. I actually personally know one and so I undertook to test his claims and theories for myself. I started a number of years ago with the question “Is it possible that the earth is flat?”

I gave it every shot I had. I investigated, listened, wrote papers, checked one claim after another.

And now, years later I can tell you with absolute certainty, honesty and sincerity, flat earth is absolutely a load of nonsense.

Why is it nonsense, what convinced you that it's nonsense ?

Every claim I investigated fell because it either didn’t match my own personal experience or didn’t make any sense according to provable evidence.

Evidence such as the setting sun and moon which very obviously do not match flat earth claims, not even close.

Satellite tv is another, which I have tried to discuss with you at length.

An island which I see almost daily and which I can climb up and down a hill where the lower part of the island cannot be seen at the lower point.

The evidence that my amateur astronomer brother has observed himself from the southern hemisphere. No sign of Polaris there and completely different constellations to the northern hemisphere.

The list goes on and on. I’ve filled pages and pages of my checks into flat earth claims. My wife even wondered what I was spending so much time writing about!

And I repeat, I can tell you with absolute certainty, honesty and sincerity, flat earth is a load of nonsense.

That doesn't mean that you know them personally. You have been on these forums for almost 2 years, but as far as I am aware, you don't know any other poster personally.

And that is a big problem with forums like this. You do not know the people your are debating. Their personal situations. Their strengths or weaknesses. Or whether they actually know anything about the subject.

When you meet in the real - I mean physical world (we are still all real people, even online), it is much easier to gauge and evaluate other people. You gradually realise that the Pete who speaks forthrightly on any subject never thinks anything through, and bases his strong views on Daily Mail headlines (he thinks reading an entire article would make him a world expert - although that has never happened). Or Mike who is the devil's advocate, always disagreeing, always pressing. Or Jim who is joking. Or someone who is autistic. Some people understand the subject while others just talk.

Who you can disagree with robustly and who needs to be replied to with care (you can still disagree).

The internet is full of armchair critics. Sitting at home typing away it doesn't matter if you are right or wrong. But for someone whose job depends on a correct understanding, it makes a world of difference.

Fully agree.

The first time I came across flat earth claims, I thought: really? I guess for most people, the discovery that you can see further than you should across a lake or along a canal is the first hint that something might be wrong the globe claims. But you then learn about refraction. Then realise that ignoring refraction, seeing 'too far' doesn't make the earth flat, it just makes it a bigger globe.

The more you look, the more evidence to can see that agrees with a globe earth and would be impossible on a flat earth. This is evidence you can see with your own eyes. You don't need satellite images. Or NASA. But you do need some basic understanding of geometry and maths to correctly interpret what you see.

Flat Earthers rarely if ever respond to these arguments.

I don't need all these squiggles, naughts & crosses to see God's glory in what he has created which is a stationary level stable earth with the sun, moon & all the stars circling above us. Simplicity at it's best.

Tell me something, how does water stick to a ball ? (confused.com).

Yes, this was also the first hint for me that the earth might be flat. The claim that I shouldn’t be able to see as far as I can on a globe earth. But very quickly I learned about refraction. Which was really just remembering physics from my school days when I learnt and did experiments of how light bends through different density mediums.

From there it was one claim after another failing as I thought about them and checked them against the evidence.

Regarding Bible verses, it’s very obvious to anyone truly studying the Bible that poetry and metaphor are used extensively.

And the question I started with “Is it possible that the earth is flat?”

The only and definitive answer after all my checking and investigating for a number of years is “absolutely not!”

God created those “squiggles, naughts & crosses” for His greatest creation, people, to discover and use.

Ridiculing them doesn’t change that fact. And just because it’s all gobbledygook to you doesn’t change it either.

That not what God wrote or taught.
