  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You have a good point. Messianics, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Seventh Day Adventists still observe it on Saturday (technically it is sundown Friday to sundown Saturday).

But look at what you usually do starting sundown Friday. Eat dinner, go out with friends, wake up late, do laundry, read a book, grocery shop, do something entertaining.... in essence, western cultures still think of Saturday as the day of rest.

The Sabbath was to be set apart for the Lord, and involve no work. But try to find scriptural mandates for attending the temple services on Saturday.

Jews were not allowed to make others work on the Sabbath -- employees covering your shift, grandmothers making sauce, oxen pulling plows. It was one day that people could be held accountable for not overworking others. Everything had to be done ahead of time.

Up until the 70's, the US had a day of the week when most people did not work. Now we have allowed ourselves to be driven, and have worked ourselves into a frenzy. And here we are, with the value of our money slipping....I often see these consequences connect on small scale in my life too.

God promised that if we keep Sabbaths (made for man, not man made for Sabbaths), and he would keep the rust and moth from consuming. That's what's happening on a large scale right now. We valued our time too highly.

But days of the week...those were decisions made by the community based on lunar cycles, not God's mandate. At creation, did God tell everyone when Saturday would be? God asked for the seventh day, but allowed them to use their own calendars.
The Jewish calendar counted the prior day's sunset as the beginning of the day. (Sunday night was Monday.)

I agree with you, that we put our own judgment higher than the commandment. If everyone made the shift, I would have no problem with it. But the heart of the law was rest and setting the day apart as a community; so inconsistent observance minimizes the heart of the law.

Notice there are other commandments many Christians tend to ignore...

The Sabbath is a lot more awesome then you give it credit for. For one thing it is a rehearsal for the 7000 year 1000 year rest of God, or the messianic kingdom. For another thing it is day when communion with God is available in a special way.

http://reluctant-messenger.com/sabbath-how-to-keep.htm

To clarify. Early Christians did attend worship service on Sunday, but also kept Saturday as a day of resting and connecting with God personally.

So I'm not saying to attend Saturday like the adventists, or to not attend sunday. I myself attend a non-denominational church on sunday, I'm saying that we are still supposed to rest and honor the Sabbath.

The text above explains how all of the Jewish holy days are spiritual rehearsals associated with Christ. Keeping the Sabbath is the most important one and is associated with entering the rest of God.

I know it's hard for you to understand, but those who decided what and what does not go into the Bible did not have our best interests at heart.

The Epistle of Barnabas Chapter 13

[1] Furthermore it is written concerning the sabbath, in the Ten Commandments, which God spake in the Mount Sinai to Moses, face to face; Sanctify the sabbath of the Lord with pure hands, and with a clean heart.

[2] And elsewhere he saith; If thy children shall keep my sabbaths, then will I put my mercy upon them.

[3] And even in the beginning of the creation he makes mention of the sabbath. And God made in six days the works of his hands; and he finished them on the seventh day, and he rested the seventh day, and sanctified it.

[4] Consider, my children, what that signifies, he finished them in six days. The meaning of it is this; that in six thousand years the Lord God will bring all things to an end.

[5] For with him one day is a thousand years; as himself testifieth, saying, Behold this day shall be as a thousand years. Therefore, children, in six days, that is, in six thousands years, shall all things be accomplished.

[6] And what is that he saith, And he rested the seventh day; he meaneth this; that when his Son shall come, and abolish the season of the Wicked One, and judge the ungodly; and shall change the sun and the moon, and the stars; then he shall gloriously rest in the seventh day.

[7] He adds lastly; Thou shalt sanctify it with clean hands and a pure heart. Wherefore we are greatly deceived if we imagine that any one can now sanctify that day which God has made holy, without having a heart pure in all things.

[8] Behold therefore he will then truly sanctify it with blessed rest, when we (having received the righteous promise, when iniquity shall be no more, all things being renewed by the Lord) shall be able to sanctify it, being ourselves first made holy.

[9] Lastly, he saith unto them; Your new moons and your sabbaths I cannot bear them. Consider what he means by it; the sabbaths, says he, which ye now keep are not acceptable unto me, but those which I have made; when resting from all things I shall begin the eight day, that is, the beginning of the other world.

[10] For which cause we observe the eighth day with gladness, in which Jesus rose from the dead; and having manifested himself to his disciples, ascended into heaven.

[11] It remains yet that I speak to you concerning the temple how these miserable men being deceived have put their trust in the house, and not in God himself who made them, as if it (the temple) was the habitation of God.

[12] For much after the same manner as the Gentiles, they consecrated him (God) in the temple.

[13] But learn therefore how the Lord speaketh, rendering the temple vain: Who has measured the heaven with a span, and the earth hand? Is it not I? Thus saith the Lord, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What is the house that ye will build me? Or what is the place of my rest? Know therefore that all their hope is in vain.

[14] And again he speaketh after this manner: Behold they that destroy this temple, even they shall again build it up. And so it came to pass; for through their wars it is now destroyed by their enemies; and the servants of their enemies built it up.

[15] Futhermore it has been made manifest, how both the city and the temple, and the people of Israel should be given up. For the Scripture saith; And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the Lord will deliver up the sheep of his pasture, and their fold, and their tower into destruction. and it is come to pass, as the Lord hath spoken.

[16] Let us inquire therefore, whether there be any temple of God? Yes there is; and that there, where himself declares that he would both make and perfect it. For it is written; And it shall be that as soon as the week shall be completed, the temple of the Lord shall be gloriously built in the name of the Lord.

[17] I find therefore that there is a temple. But how shall it be built in the name of the Lord? I will show you.

[18] Before we believed in God, the habitation of our heart was corruptible, and feeble, as a temple truly built with hands.

[19] For it was a house full of devils, inasmuch as there was done in it whatsoever was contrary unto God. But it shall be built in the name of the Lord.

[20] Consider, how that the temple of the Lord shall be very gloriously built; and by what means that shall be, learn.

[21] Having received remission of our sins, and trusting in the name of the Lord, we become renewed, being again created as it were from the beginning. Wherefore God truly dwells in our house, that is, in us.

[22] But how does he dwell in us? The word of his faith, the calling of his promise, the wisdom of his righteous judgements, the commands of his doctrine; he himself prophesies within us, he himself dwelleth in us, and openeth to us who were in bondage of death the gate of our temple, that is, the mouth of wisdom, having given repentance unto us; and by this means has brought us to be an incorruptible temple.

[23] He therfore that desires to be saved looketh not unto the man, but unto him that dwelleth in him, and speaketh by him; being struck with wonder, foreasmuch as he never either heard him speaking such words out of his mouth, nor ever desired to hear them.

[24] This is that spiritual temple that is built unto the Lord.

Good point...

There's a difference between making God our focal point, and opposing what others say. I doubt the verse means we are to live lawlessly.

The rest of the sentence values religious standards -

"...Things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ."

We have to remember that the original Law came from God. The same God that we worship, the same one that gave us freedom in Christ, and redemption.

Sometimes I hear Christians insult or even despise the Law that God instructed to be kept for all generations.

Earlier in the passage it says, "6 Therefore as you have received Christ http://studylight.org/desk/?query=col+2&t=nas&sr=0#R93Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude."

Implying some form of external guidance and standards.

Romans 14

5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.9 For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.14 I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

The facts are this and there is much freedom and liberty in Him. Jesus said that everything in the law and the prophet are concerning Him, He said that He came to fulfill the Law, to attempt to keep it after He said He's fulfilling it is to say that He didn't get the job done. He was made under law in order to redeem us from it (Galatians 4:4-5, Romans 10:4). This is not something i take lightly being as though all of my in-laws are Adventist (i really had to look into it). People, get a hold of this... Do you not realize that the Law was called the "ministry of death"(2 Cor 3:7), its purpose was to make sin arise and abound in you, so that you would realize that you need a savior, because no man can keep it perfectly. The purpose of the Law was to lead the people to Christ... please read Galatians 3:23-25. The entire book of Galatians was written when Paul found out that the Galatians started keeping the sabbath and other rituals after getting pressured by the old Jews.... how did He address them? He says... You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you? Then he says "did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law or by the hearing of faith" so why do you think that going back to the law/flesh can add anything to you? We get saved by faith in Jesus and God's grace, then as soon as we get into a church, now you need the law to maintain your salvation? Then in Galatians 5 he says "hold on tight to your freedom v1, and that those who are led by the Spirit are not under the law v18. Either Law or Grace... you cannot live in both and we know that it is by grace that we are saved. The entire book of Hebrew was written to show that the new covenant is superior to the old, that the ministry of Jesus is superior to Moses. Jesus and Paul made it clear that the two cannot to mixed. The reality is, if you try to keep the law after Jesus has fulfilled it... you separate yourself from Jesus and God's grace.... Galatians 5:4. The Law was never God's will, but what He had to do at the time... the law is not of faith (Galatians 3:12) nor does it bring life (the Holy Spirit-Galatians 3:21-22) I hope this brings freedom to someone and please go read the scriptures posted here for yourself and in context. Live unto God. Keeping rules only leads to more rules, not life. First you get ten, then up you to thirty, then your focus isnt even on Him anymore.

Can we all agree that we are made righteous through Jesus right...?

1 Tim 1:8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine

Why? To lead to Christ, once Christ (faith) has come, you are no longer under the schoolmaster. Its His grace, His good works and not ours. It is finished... the law came from sin, He could not have taken away sin with also taking the law that causes sin and nailing them both to the cross and destroying them in His own body... Thank you Lord. Be free to the mentality that says "I am right with God because I keep this or because I do that". So it was taken away lest any man should boast and brag about earning his own way into God's unmerited favor. The devil tried tempting Jesus with the same thought pattern saying.. if you are the Son of God turn the stone into bread, in other words... prove who you are by what you can do, does the not law do the same thing? God is gonna bless me because I keep the Law... because I'm faithful, because I tithe, because I fast. No He is faithful and you've just set up your own righteousness. According to what you believe, so be it done unto you. That's why people don't get answers or blessed until they fast... because you set that up in your own belief system and restricted God to the method (Law Mentality), meanwhile Jesus says... "look at the birds, they neither sow or reap and God feeds them daily, are you not much better than they?" That's Kingdom principle everything I am belongs to you God and everything you are belongs to me (Rom 8:17, Eph 1:3, Eph 3:19 and the list goes on).. Bless God I'm free to live in it!!!!!!! So are you!

~Blessings
