Actually, more people would have likely died if we hadn't dropped the bombs, given that Japan was so resistant to surrender that common citizens were being told to arm themselves however they could and fight back rather than surrender. It was estimated that a naval and carpet bombing tactic would extend the war 2-3 years, and more than double the casualties on both sides.
I believe they predicted, to invade Japan, would have cost well over an additional 1 million lives, vs dropping the bombs.
So, it could be said, Einstein saved lives.
