I've noticed that cats do hate that sound. Does anyone know why? Or is it one of those "just because" things? I've always wondered.
I think it startles them. The same recommendation can be used for dogs. It's meant to startle their train of thought.

You are correct, it startles them and is a great training tool for dogs as well as cats.:)

Well, we have 2 kitties and we've had one of them declawed at the same time he was neutered...his front feet, not his back ones. The other will probably be declawed at the same time we have her spayed. They're indoor cats and have never seen the outside unless it's trips to the vet. I haven't noticed any change in his personality...he's still sweet and lovable. He doesn't bite unless he nips a finger while going after a cat treat. And he still catches mice all the time, even without front claws.

Love, Heather

I work at a veterinarian's office, and I always feel bad for that cats that are declawed. One of my cats is declawed, but that happened when I was too young to know the difference. We got our second cat a few years ago and after I saw how hard on them and actually found out what it was, there was no way I was going to let my baby get her claws taken out!! She is really good at scratching her post. For a while, she did scratch the couch, but we got these long strips of double sided tape to put on the edge of it. Once she felt her paws stick to the tape, she decided scratching on the couch wasn't a good idea!

Why do you think ANY cat's front paws should be declawed?

I don't agree with declawing either...My husband and I once had a stray who was declawed..all four paws...I felt so sorry for the cat. She would spend hours on our tables, chairs, and pizza boxes sharpening her "claws" that were not there. I think you should not declaw because if you ever make them an outdoor cat down the road...which you never know...they dont stand a chance. All my cats have their claws and I have got two cat trees in my house and that cuts down alot on them clawing the furniture. If you need to declaw for some reason think about those little plastic tabs that you can put on your cats claws...they sell them at jeffers.com...I use to work there...a long time ago.
