I actually got clued into the Dresden Files thanks to the sadly canceled TV show.
I like well written fiction that plays upon supernatural themes. It hasn't affected my
faith as christian as I have a solid theological and biblical foundation to stand upon, but
by golly I enjoy a good story, and the Dresden Files does such a thing in terms of
fiction in this genre.

Very true. In fact, I don't know how far along in the series you are, but you will see it does acknowledge the Christian mythos within itself, and has many plot lines that deal with such entities in that mythos. I think most Christians would take a very great liking to the character, Michael Carpenter. I also think most Christians would take a liking to Harry, even though he does use magic, it is acknowledged that his heart is "right" and is very selfless in his actions.

I rather liked the Dresden Files books. What is the most recent? It has been a while and the next might be out.

One thing I rather like is that Harry has a life that is interesting, but not easy. He pays a pretty big price for having Magic abilities. Not a price I would be willing to pay.

I'm sure some Christians will be unhappy that various beings are not good or evil because of their kind, but that is part of what makes the stories good and I'd say from a Christian perspective people should be judged as individuals if they are judged at all.

I'm up to book 5 (the library is not a reliable source...) and I'm... amused with the series so far. I want to finish the series/continue reading (I know they aren't 'finished') because they're really quick reads and are pretty entertaining. They're not exactly great literature by any stretch, and I roll my eyes far too often, but they are amusing/entertaining. I don't really think the character of Michael automatically redeems the series though.

I love me some Jim Butcher. Both Dresden Files and Furies are fantastic series. I really enjoyed watching Butcher develop as a writer as the series progressed. He started out with some very formulaic plot oriented fantasy, but has grown past that and is actually exploring some deeper themes with his stuff now without losing the action. And his third acts are the best in the biz. He can wrap up a story in a bang up fashion and leave just enough threads loose and dangling that the next book can never come out soon enough. I have December marked for Captain's Furies and April marked for Turn Coat.

Hey all, thanks for the replies. I have been away from the forum for a bit, so I apologize on the long response time.

The most current book in the series is, A Small Favor. The next book due out is Turncoat, which from reading the summary of it, Morgan will be needing Harry's protection this go around. For those who have read or are reading the series, I am sure you are appreciating the irony and humor of that.

Also, Jim Butcher has started to have the novels published in a graphic novel format. He started this trend off with the book Welcome to the Jungle, which actually is a prequel to the novel series. Storm Front(The first book of the novel series.) should be out at end of October. I have read Welcome to the Jungle, and the story is spot on and good. All of Harry's humor and mirth translates well to the graphic novel format, and the artists did an excellent job of drawing the characters. I would say fans will like this new format a lot. Turncoat should be out in early April.

As for the Furies series, I could never really get into it. I am not saying it is bad, or poorly written, because it is not. It just did not catch me like the characters of The Dresden Files. Also, the whole Urban Fantasy setting really hooked me into The Dresden Files as I love the such settings, especially when done in real world settings. The sad thing though is that I am noticing a literal GLUT of new Urban Fantasy series and authors out, and while I am not saying that it is a bad thing, I hate the bandwagon that forms when a certain sub-genre gets more popular. It just stinks, because while not all of it is going to be drivel, and I have sadly picked up some titles from new series that are utter "bah", it just gets painfully expensive to weed out the good from the bad. This especially true when your local library can't keep up with all series and titles. To sum it up, I hate dropping cash on bad books. I also hate it when a series gets lame mid-game. There is nothing more irritating than reading a good stretch of books only to have the next X number be total filler, cliche, or just generally sub-par. This especially gets annoying when the books start to get good again because now the series is more than likely just going to shift between ups and downs and that is a an enthusiasm killer.

Anyway, I shall stop ranting, and have a good night folks.

I'm in the middle of Princeps' Fury (I got the title wrong in my above post). Simply awesome. He keeps getting better and better. It is looking like Furies is a finite series, whereas Dresden will go on until he tires of it.

And only 3 months until Turncoat. I can't wait.

Finished Turn Coat a while back, just forgot this thread was out here.

Best Dresden book in some time. We finally get to see a bit of the Black Council and it looks like Harry has picked up yet another ally that may be the end of him or turn him to the dark side.

Anyways i'll get off the box and hand over the megaphone.

It was a blast. He is a very witty speaker. Looks just like every other nerd my age. He cut his hair and shaved his beard so he looks nothing like his book jacket photo now.

Changes was awesome. Best to date. He has the collected Dresden short stories coming out in November and it features a novella from Karrin's POV that takes place 45 minutes after Changes. And the next Dresden out next April.

I agree about Changes. I am glad to see there is a next Dresden novel due out next year. I was afraid just at the very end of changes that Butcher might be killing Harry off. Of course the title of the next novel looks to be ghost story so maybe he did.

Did he say anything about another Alera series?

At some comic-con he mentioned that he has enough story material for around 30 Dresden novels. As for Alera, he did mention that it would be cool to revisit it 300 years or so after Octavius' reign, but there is nothing in the works for now. He also mentioned that there may be some short stories featuring a detective team of a Canim and a Marat to explore those races a bit more, but personally I kind of doubt it.

And to put your fears to rest, the first line of the next Dresden is: 'Dying is easy, it is living that is hard.'

Thanks. Sounds like a line from The Outlaw Josey Wales.
