  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Marching for freedom

BBC News

Forty years ago, on 28 August, 1963, 250,000 people gathered peacefully in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC to demand equal rights for black Americans. It was a watershed moment for the civil rights movement and became the most vaunted protest in American history.

Martin Luther King delivered his magnificent "I HAVE A DREAM" speech, which is often remembered as the overwhelming inspiration of the day. It reached millions of white Americans watching the march on TV and opened their eyes to the injustices millions of black Americans were suffering......(go to above site to read MORE)

---->>> Below is 'part text' of his speech.

"I HAVE A DREAM"....

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I will go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.

With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day, this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning: "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring." And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.
Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.
Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California.
But not only that.
Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.
Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: "Free at last! Free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

This shows a great need for a well-spoken humanist leader to come forward and compassionately promote equal freedoms for atheists as well...and reverse the fallacious stories that we are dirty, mindless, heathen, criminal savages not ever fit to be freedom loving American patriots.

I wonder if this day will ever come...I have a Dream.

40 years later. I think were better off than we were 40 years ago. I also think there is still a long way to go. Minorities of all kinds still face discrimination. I think it is sad that in a nation supposedly founded on the ideals of freedom and equality for all that such things have to be fought for in the first place.

I've often wondered if King ever had an original thought in his whole life. It's been noted that he received his doctorate by submitting a plagiarized thesis and even his "I have a dream speech" was not his original thoughts. It was filled with quotes from others.

Makes me wonder why he got his own holiday and Washington and Lincoln now have to share theirs. Just doesn't make sense, unless of course you're into political correctness.

Conservatives Reject Homosexuals' Involvement in Civil Rights Event

According to the Family Research Council, homosexual behavior cannot be equated with such innate characteristics as sex or race. The FRC made the comments the day before the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech. To commemorate the 1963 "March on Washington" event, groups from around the nation plan to gather at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.

While many liberal organizations are represented, the FRC says homosexual advocacy groups should not be among them.

As if Washington and Lincoln were perfect. Lincoln still has most of America believing the civil war was about slavery.

At the moment the main concern of much of the US is political correctness, even if it has gotten out of hand.
Are you insinuating that King was perfect?

The thought of fighting inequality is nothing new but taking action and serving as a voice is far more unique.

LOL! Hey, when you find me speech from Bush that was actually written by the man then let me know.

Well of course the Family Research Council says that. Like most of their other statements this also is not true.

Kitty why do you keep posting information about an organization that purposefully lies about gays and lesbians? That purposefully falsifies research and misrepresents the research of others?

If you choose to not believe them go right ahead...I choose to believe them over a gay apologist.

Because they are the only places that say what she likes?

Poor thing she just can't grasp the fact that I'm not the topic of discussion. :(

If people don't have the conviction to stand up to critism over their words than perhaps they should keep quiet. Don't you think?

You have no problems taking this to a personal level when your challenger is a homosexual.

I don't direct personal remarks to posters regardless of their sexual proclivitites. I do my best to stay with the topic being discussed, Also to remind you the rules state 2) Directing posts towards individuals, instead of the topics and issues being discussed are not to be done. Yet one or two posters here insist on turning every discussion I participate in into a discussion about ME. It does become tiring.

Where I see biggotry, and ignorance, I will not let it go.

When Badfish saw his thread was refuted, he conceded. You continued to post the source in that thread, relying on a LIAR to back up your claims.

Why? did you miss the post saying he lied? Or do you not care if he is proven a liar? or will you ignore this point like you do any one that questions the validity of a post of yours?

BTW

I was not responding because it is you.
I was responding to WHAT you said.
you need to understand that it isn't cause it is you. its because of what you say, that needs to be addressed so innocent minds who do not know any better see your drivel and put faith in it. When you post factual links, I will ignore those, or comment appropriately. But a responsible person will not let hateful lies go unadressed.

I am not the topic..what is posted in another thread is NOT the topic. The topic is The DREAM: "Let freedom ring
When you make personal comments to me or about me..you are not responding to what I say but to or about me personally..that is not how a mature person debates a topic.
You can disagree with what I post and explain your reasoning behind it but it is wrong for you to make this a personal issue about ME.
