I am curious, exactly how powerful is the devil supposed to be? I know the devil isn't like god, so there must be a limit.

He is more powerful than Michael the Archangel, but not as powerful as God.

Jude 9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

He is THE most powerful person in the universe, next to God, Himself.

In the Tribulation, miracles of the Devil will be attributed to God.

But a lot of the bad stuff gets attributed to the devil, even though people say it is all god's will, technically god could prevent all sin and hardship.

Why would the devil, a supposedly malicious being, do anything beneficial?

Devil does not hate human. Devil loves human. And devil is definitely not malicious to human.
