  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One of the scariest movies I have ever seen.
It could have been better, but the few things I didn't like or would have done different certianly don't that much away from this awesome scarefest.

Definitly go see this in the theater for full effect.

I don't recall any nudity at all.
It has some bad language but nothing over the top.
It's gory at times, but not too much.

This is one of those horror movies that focuses on psychological terror and physical terror and handles it much more than the pathetic movie with a similiar plot called "The Cave".

ive seen 'the Cave' didnt like it much.

I will wait till it comes out on DVD. I agree with the above post - The Cave stunk. very disappointing. maybe The Descent will be better.
You don't want to do that with this movie. The main reason is how much louder the theater is.These creatures are super loud. Most of the scarey moments involve a loud setting. You're home theater just won't compare.

This was a great movie! I have seen just about every horror movie that has come out recently and this is right at the top with a very few select others. There was one part that was really gross, but i won't go into that as there will be some that haven't seen it yet. I agree with seeing it in the theater. It just wouldn't be the same on DVD.

Does that mean that they had to "resort" to excessive loudness to provide"jumps" in this movie,as so many today do? Also how bad is the language?

There is some language, but it wasn't too much.

Saying "resort to excessive loudness" as something bad.
Would be like saying "Did they use that hitchcock style again??"
Or "Did they use those funky camera tricks again?"
Or computer graphics, etc.

Sound is the most important part of a movie in getting emotions across.
Try watching some of those movies you listed that made you cry without music, only voices.

Sound in horror movies is meant to put you on edge, or uneasy, and in "boo tactics" make you jump.
And in this movie, you will jump...........oh yes you will. ^_^

But not if you wait for it on DVD. :preach:

I just was wondering, because my son read some gripes on IMDb the other day about how many horror films today are not scary at all, except they blast you out of your seat with sound, to make up for the lack of any truly scary elements, but I agree with your points. :)

I went and saw this the other day with the mrs. I love horror movies, so I try to catch them when I can. The mrs. hates them, as she is easily scared. But I dragged her along. I saw it was getting awesome reviews, so I thought I was going to actually see a good horror movie (which is rare these days).

It actually was good, for the first 30 minutes. Then it went down the toilet, and in a hurry. The 'scariest' part was when Sara had the dream in the cabin.. The first part of the party entering the cave is great. The suspense of not knowing what was coming was well done. BUT - once the mosters show up, the cheese factor went way off the scale. First off, the 'monsters' aren't scary. They look like men with a costume and makeup on. Oohh scary. The sound they make is of a wild boar squeeling, for crying out loud. Some of them are animated, and it shows big time. Pre-monster, the atmosphere and suspense were great, post-monster, it relied to heavily on loud noises/screams, and the jumpiness factor, which to me is a cheesy way of 'scaring' people.

In the end, I left disappointed. Even my wife, who abhors scary movies laughed about it, shrugging it off as "not bad at all." Wolf Creek, nows there's an awesome movie. Best horror movie I've seen all year. It's on DVD, go check it out.

You fell victim to hype.
Hype will kill nearly all films.
I saw this type of reaction on Yahoo Movie Reviews.
At first nearly everyone was giving it B+ and A ratings, saying "its the best horror movie in years" etc.
Then after the first week the ratings started to shift.
"I give it a C, I thought this was going to be great with all the positive reviews....." etc.

I remember watching Cape Fear(robert deniro) many years ago.
Several people said it was great and awesome, blah blah.
So I watch it and I thought it was "over rated".

But then I watched it again about 2 years later on cable TV. I was bored and I said to myself "I'll just watch a little before I go to bed".
I ended up watching the whole thing and walked away with a totally different view.
I thought the movie was great!

This is what I told my friend about The Descent.
"It's the scariest movie I have seen in awhile.........but it could have been better. Definitly go and see it."
And that is the truth, it could have been better. But if you put that movie against all other horror movies, it's far better than 85% of all horror movies.
It's definitly in my top 20 favorite horror movies.
BUT I didn't tell my friend that. Because I knew hype would have killed it for him.

Wolf Creek was AWESOME! I'm surprised it got such terrible reviews.
My 3 favorite horror movies this year.

1. The Descent
2. Wolf Creek
3. High Tension

All of these were made outside of USA.
