The new version is being released this month, I believe. Always worrisome when a true classic is redone. Michael Rennie was the perfect, otherworldly alien messenger. Keanu Reeves may be too one-dimensional for that role. I can see why he was cast, since there is a certain physical resemblance, but I wonder if he has the acting chops to pull it off. Any opinions?

I haven't seen it yet, but the previews don't look too promising.

I think it would have worked a little better if it had been a faithful remake with modern-day special effects.
I don't know why the threat of war was changed to environmental destruction in the remake, since the former is still relevant and a threat to mankind.

I never saw the original so I went in not knowing what to expect. The story was very slow paced to the point of being bored sometimes and it just felt really shallow. I suppose as far as Sci-Fi movies go, it would be a hit (comparing it to the cheesy programs I see on the Sci-Fi Channel sometimes), but as a stand along movie trying to be a blockbuster, I found it very disappointing and they could have done so much more with it.

I give it a 5/10

I think a lot of movies like the original Day the Earth Stood Still were very time bound, in that it was about the cold war, and dire warnings and the like. The new one (I haven't seen it, admittedly) seems to be about global warming (?), and I really don't think it works.

This appears to be covering territory already covered (admittedly, really badly) by M Night Shyamalan's The Happening. (which I didn't like)

I dunno... doesn't have the right feel to it.

The characters were flat. The kid, especially, was so obnoxious I wanted to slap him.

I thought the ending was too predictable. I mean we knew he wasn't really going to destroy humanity. And the reasoning was banal. Human: "Oh yeah, we are destroying the planet because we are greedy and thoughtless, but we can change." Alien: "OK. You're off the hook. Have a nice day." (There was a hint that he turned off all the lights before he left, but it wasn't explicit. Maybe that bit got left on the cutting room floor.)

The cinematography was good.

I came home and watched the original. It was much better.

Having seen it, I have to admit, I wasn't impressed. Keanu Reeves used to be a really fun actor to watch, especially in his old teen heartthrob films, but I haven't been very impressed with his roles in any of the movies he's done lately. He was too bland and expressionless, and while I understand he was supposed to portray someone disconnected from humanity, he was just dead onscreen. It was boring. Normally, I'm satisfied with the movies I see but this one I left feeling disappointed about the waste of time and money.

People are way too harsh on this movie.
There are a lot of very very very bad movies out there, movies that are so bad that you don't even talk about them.

My favorite parts are when they talked to Keanu Reeves.
"Are you human?"
My body is.
"Do you feel any pain?"
My body does.
"Are you aware of any impeding attacks on earth?"
....You should let me go.

I liked those scenes, I wish they had more of them in the movie.
Anyways, don't expect this to be a top ten for the year, but it's still a decent movie.

I like watching movies while reading the subtitles on DVD. It would be nice if there was a DVD science book feature of the movie so you can read and see pictures on computer. I think this movie should be one trilogy or two trilogies like Stars Wars because so much is not known about the lives of the humanlike alien and the giant robot.

Although this movie had good action scenes, it's actually scary to think that the main point to the film is the Big bright lights. And the bright lights refer to an 'alien' species and possible global termination and fear.

It's almost as if Hollywood is preparing the World to be 'afraid' of the light and return of Christ. It's mentioned in scripture that when Christ returns it will be like lightning from across the world, all men will see it. God is Light.

Oh well, that's just me.

No, the point of the film is that humanity is destroying the environment. Ho-hum.

And the bright lights refer to an 'alien' species and possible global termination and fear.

This was not a scary movie.

It's almost as if Hollywood is preparing the World to be 'afraid' of the light and return of Christ.

No, it's almost like Hollywood was trying to sell popcorn to those foolish enough to think this might be a worthwhile remake of a classic film.

It's mentioned in scripture that when Christ returns it will be like lightning from across the world, all men will see it.

Light is a many-hued metaphor.

God is Light.
God is light.
God is love.
Light is electromagnetic radiation.
QED: God is electromagnetic radiation?

What's up with that?!

Oh well, that's just me.
Alas, if that were only true.

:sigh:
