The idea of the personal (particular) judgement terrifies me. "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment." (Matthew 12:36). If only it were just idle words!
I've heard some people say that we won't have to answer; that Christ has answered for us, legally justifying us. Others say we still will even though He has done this, and others say there will be a particular judgement. I'm curious to see what others think. I am still new enough to the faith to not know where the Scripture is for this, so any help in that area would be great.

1 John 1
6
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

If we are born again, the Holy Spirit tells us to confess our sins.

And if God saved us, the Holy Spirit will urge us to do what is pleasing to God.

Philippians 2
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

We were judged when we became Christians and we won't be condemned.

John 5
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

How to know if you are a Christian:

1 John 5
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

We are being transformed by God; we have a new nature that desires to please Him. Don't be afraid. Just ask for forgiveness and help in overcoming sin. "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

What needs to be done is to consider, who Jesus was speaking to, when He spoke it, and why. What was the context? How does this relate to Paul saying to believers that because they judged themselves as sinners, they will not be judged, because they have been judged already, and because they received Christ they have passed from death to life. They have become new creations in Christ. God has said of them that their sins and iniquities He will remember no more. This means that there is no basis for any judgment of genuine Christian believers.

In fact, there will be just one item on the agenda at the last Judgment. What was their attitude to Christ? All the sins and iniquities of unsaved unbelievers will be held up as evidence of their rejection of Christ. Genuine Christian converts won't be at that Judgment.

Until a person experiences earthly death ... or until Jesus returns, they can choose Christ or not. If one chooses Christ and follows him their name will not be blotted out of the book of life and therefore will receive eternal life with Him. If one has Christ they have confessed their sin and have received forgiveness and are covered by His blood.

Revelation 3

5 Like them, the one who is victorious will be dressed in white. And I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels.

Hebrews 4:12-13

“God’s word is alive and working and is sharper than a double-edged sword. It cuts all the way into us, where the soul and the spirit are joined, to the center of our joints and bones. And it judges the thoughts and feelings in our hearts. Nothing in all the world can be hidden from God. Everything is clear and lies open before him, and to him we must explain the way we have lived.”

Held accountable? Yes. Yet we ARE forgiven and not condemned. We do not fear to come to Him now, nor will we then. Praise and glory to Jesus!

Through Jesus we (the saved) will presented perfect and sinless.

Revelation 20:6

6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection!

The accountable ... judgement has taken place before He comes, because His reward is with Him when He does return.

Revelation 22:20

12“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done

At His 2nd coming, we (the saved) will be changed and He takes the saved (the forgiven/redeemed) home to be with Him from there on out.

1 Corinthians 15

51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

The Return of the Lord

13Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.

15By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. 17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

God Bless.

For Christians, we no longer come into judgment, but have passed out of death into life (John 5:24). We are already legally justified at the present, this isn't reserved for some future event only. So we have nothing to fear for "there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). We remain just as long as we are in the One who is just.

I am convinced, however, that there will be an evaluation (as it were) of how we managed our time, used our gifts, and whatever else that we were responsible for in this life.

2 Cor 5: "10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad." -

Rom 2:
4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”:

7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,

9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

11 For there is no partiality with God.

12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified;

14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

=============================

Rev 14:6-7
6 Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— 7 saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.

That's right folks - that future event that John predicts in Rev 14:6-7 has come - that message is for now.

Matt 7 - Christ said that the "test" is in what we do - the fruits that are seen.
16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

According to Romans 2 they are in fact "looking at those trees" to SEE IF they are the born-again alive-in-the-spirit transformed Christian or if they are merely "playing the game of religion"

======================

That judgment in heaven has already started - beginning with the Adam and those who lived before the flood and making its way down through time - to our age. The case of each person is brought up to see IF the supernatural Gospel "change of heart" has taken place in the heart and if they now walk by faith not by sight. IF they do have such fruit of the Spirit then as Daniel 7:22 says regarding that judgment "judgment was passed in favor of the saints"

(What Christianity Today calls the "fifth largest" Christian denomination in the world today... was raised up not long ago - specifically to speak about this topic)
