The actual event is not current, but this reporting of it is.

Having lived much of my life in western New York state, I've seen Niagara Falls many times, both before and after this took place. But I did not see it while this was happening.

hmmm i always thought it was more curved

This is the horseshoe section of the falls. The falls area crosses the U.S./Canada border, and the horseshoe section is in Canada, where about 90% of the water flows.

I think so too.

When you stand at the falls, it's amazing the sense of power you feel near you. It's hard to imagine shutting down that power.

But it's not really a shutting down of all that power, it's just a lack of the source of that power (specifically, water).

That seems a distinction without a difference in this context.

To me it's the difference between the upstream water level dropping below the level necessary to continually feed the falls at the normal rate (ho-hum) and Superman using a giant piece of sheet metal to push against the full-force of the raging waters (totally awesome).

One is shutting down, one is just sort of, I dunno, a trickling off.

To be fair though, it was shut down, as opposed to simply running dry. From the link: "In order to stop the Niagara River running over the American Falls, engineers constructed a dam consisting of 27,800 tons of rock, stopping the water for the first time in 12,000 years"

Now that's cool. I actually work in the hydro-electric industry, so I deal with dams on a daily basis. I knew there was a dam involved in Niagara somehow, but I didn't realize it was the reason for the events pictured. Makes more sense now.
