So life came to be with no purpose. It just happens to be what happened

The purpose or reason for life, if there is one, is a religious or philosophical concept. Its not a question science can answer.

My own view is that there is no evidence for an overriding purpose to life but then, I'm an atheist - I would say that. :)

You can believe it if you like. The problem is demonstrating it scientifically.
Any speculation on how the universe was created is a belief. There is no way to prove the mechanism involved in creating our reality. I just go with what seems the most logical to me. That is what has been created needs a creator. It makes more sense to me than molecules randomly joining together to make a physical reality.

Jacob and his 12 sons? You missed me with that one.
I don't know if it posted. My reason for asking about Jacob was I wondered where mythology stops and history begins in the Bible

A lot of people say the first 11 chapters of Genesis just wondered if you agree

When you feel you don't have enough information to make a decision does it not make logical sense to adopt a neutral ("I don't know") approach until you have enough info to decide one way or the other?

Some things you come to believe by faith. I have many doubts and there are many things I don't understand but I believe there is a creator. I don't see everything just happening on it's own. That to me is harder to believe than that there is a God.

Do you take communion?
Of course. Not that it is any of your business, but I do. Next you will no doubt insinuate that I disbelieve in Original Sin
Where does mythology stop and history begin in the Bible
They appear in various proportion throughout the book.

But that's not really at issue here. Theists believe that there is a God, atheists do not; but the science should be the same for both--and is for most. It's only when science appears to contradict what you think your holy book is telling you that there's an issue.

How do you know which parts to believe?

The question was actually addressed to @rturner76 in response to his post.

Having said that I suspect his answer would be similar to yours.

One of the greatest difficulties I have with Christianity is this issue of 'faith'. I find it impossible to understand how Christians can adopt such a central belief without evidence or, in some cases, in the face of conflicting evidence.

I've never been a Christian. After 73 years of informed non-belief, I doubt I'll ever understand. :(

It's not just the Holy Book. I just don't believe some of the things you do.

For instance...? We share belief in the tenets of the Nicene Creed certainly. What else could be of importance?

I believe all of it. It's the Word of God, is it not? I just don't believe all of is literal history or even was intended to be.
I don't know how you determine what is mythology and what is history but you have your beliefs and I have mine. I won't ridicule yours. Glad you believe
