Hey everyone, RPer and music-lover alike! This thread was inspired by conversation I've had with our good friend, refined fellow, and great roleplayer, Dramaking. We've been in the habit of swapping links from Youtube and Google Video to songs that we think apply to characters of ours. Please post your character's name, the song's name, and a brief description of the character, especially why you compare them to the song, and then, last but certainly not least, the link to the song. Youtube is awesome, and SHOULD have whatever song you're looking for. Whether you're looking for Metallica, Josh Groban, Beethoven, Tunak Tunak Tun, they ought to have it.:D

For an example, here's one of the character's I had.

Sir Cornelius Godric Pellinore, an Archlich and second in command to a main villain of A Grain of Sand, in the Christia area. For him, I chose the song House of Wolves, by My Chemical Romance. Cornelius was once a Christian and a powerful Archmage, dedicated to the protection and service of God's children in a like-minded order of magi. He eventually found himself with little left to learn, though, and started looking in the wrong places for new material. He discovered darker magicks, like Necromancy, and tried to use the frighteningly efficient power of undead servants to benefit all humanity. His colleagues, however, forbade it and drove him off. The Church almost killed him, but he managed to escape and vanish from memory for a while.

Now, he is a 500+ year old Lich, a powerful undead who is very happy as an enemy to the Christians who have forsaken him. In a way, he still fears what lies beyond, and may one day try to repent for his sins, but he worries that he may have simply done too much to repent for. Most of the time, he decides "To heck with it" and goes about in his evil ways, usually with as much flare and efficiency as possible, but still thinks himself noble and honorable. That's the aspect that is most closely related to the song, especially the chorus:

"Well I think I'm gonna burn in Hell!
Everybody burn the house right down

And say
What I wanna say!
Tell me I'm an Angel, take this to my grave!
Tell me I'm a bad man, kick me like a stray!
Tell me I'm an Angel, take this to my graaaave, ya, go!

S-I-N I S-I-N. (repeat 3x)

Here is one of mine:

The song Stray by Steve Conte: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKCVZAoJYzk

Jerilyn

*Character for the thread 1st Saga - The Seed*

Race- Human
Gender- Female
Age-27
Hair color- White Blonde
Eye color- Amber Brown
Build- Voluptuous
Height- 5’6”
Weight- 130

Physical- Jerilyn is weak, from her childhood injury. She walks with the aid of a staff. She tires easily.

Description-

Jerilyn has shoulder length white-blonde hair. Fair skin. High cheekbones, squarish face shape. She has almond shaped eyes. She wears a soft leather tunic criss-crossed over her voluptuous chest. A belt around her waist holds various pouches and two hunting knives. A modest locket of metal hangs around her neck, shaped like a heart. Her soft leather pants fit snugly to her generous hips and shapely legs, tucked into a knee- length pair of thick hide boots, laced up the front. She looks somewhat barbaric but she is quite beautiful (a fact she is not aware of in the least).

Intelligence- she is very intelligent and possesses oddly enough, the ability to heal.

Personality – Jerilyn is withdrawn and insecure right now, as she has had little interaction with humans that she can remember, only the wolf brother who found her. She has a stubborn streak but is also profoundly patient. Her own suffering has given her much empathy for others.

Short History – She was left to die in the wilderness, only a modest locket around her neck (not expensive but well made) with the name Jerilyn on it and a ten-string harp found clutched in her small hands. An old wolf brother found the abandoned, wounded child and brought her to the wolf pack to nurse her. So she is familiar with the wolves even though she cannot speak with them. A wolf always accompanies her although she lacks the ability to talk to him. Jerilyn has a terrible scar up her leg (the source of the infection that nearly killed her. She walks with the aid of a staff.)

Talents –

* Healing (knows plants and herbs)
* sing and play music, Jerilyn has a ten string harp she carries on her back. She taught herself to play.
* skilled with her staff in defensive moves

OK, fine. Please don't laugh at me....:sorry:

Jacob Linder is a shapeshifter from a now-dead X-Men RPG. His father was very controlling and anti-mutant, and even though Jake hid his mutation for several years, he eventually ran away with his twin sister, Samantha.

"Numb" by Linkin Park
Tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless
Lost under the surface
Don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure
Of walking in your shoes (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)
And every second I waste is more than I can take

I've become so numb
I can't feel you there
I've become so tired
So much more aware
I'm becoming this
All I want to do
Is be more like me
And be less like you

Can't you see that you're smothering me
Holding too tightly
Afraid to lose control
'Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart
Right in front of you...

While that's one of my least favorite LP songs, you actually picked a good one, Less!:) Thanks for contributing!

Everyone, please comment on eachother's posts.:) I'd like to get some kind of intellectual conversation going if at all possible. So in Lessien's case, I'd like to comment that she picked a song popular among teenagers, with a character who is uncommonly afflicted with hardship. Is it me, or does America love victims?;)

Well I've been looking for an opportunity for a while. I would say this that while I can't find any songs I would say are DEFINITE for my favorite characters (they are all almost bi-polar) so I'll use two songs.

First the character, I made him as an extra for A Grain of Sand, but he will be taking full stage in a later thread.
His name is Sir Philip Faulconbridge, an illigitimate son of one of the richest noblemen in a major empire and a tailor's wife.
He was sold into slavery where he was abused until he became the servant of one of the greatest swordsmen in the the world.
After an odd series of events he became the apprentice of a mage and then an adventurer.
After becoming famous in the most corrupt city in the world he caused a rebellion and barely escaped with his life.

He's an odd character, half of the time he's intoxicated, and the most eccentric person in the world.
When sober, he has the weight of his hard past on his shoulders.

So two songs that both fit him perfectly.

There's this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVadlsGj2ac

Which is Sid Vicious' rendition of "My Way" which should be enought to make both Ole' Blue Eyes AND Elvis roll in their graves.

And the other is "You Know my Name" by Chris Cornell.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7j93Bf-EyI

They both fit him well, the first because of his violent tendencies to go far from the established.

The other because of his reactions to his many violent responsibilities.

If I were anything to do with music, I'd post something... But I'd rather read the lyrics. And I know almost no songs.

I'd love to find one for my character Ren Aldir, though. If I knew how to start.

Music would be a good way to create characters. Anyone ever tried to do this in reverse, making the character FROM the music?

On principle, if you're stuck for chars, it's best to drraw from external stimuli.

I'm a mostly principle-based writer, so I'll read books on archetypes and personality and usually invent a complicated system that turns into a character.

But usually I need a core feeling. A sense. I work from te inside out.

Music is good because it generates emotions iside of people. Raw emotion, IMO, is the seed of character.

Amen, MD. I usually don't initially create a character like that, but I get scenes in my head while listening to songs that really influence how a character's... character... comes out in certain situations. I've got one going for Lord Kiva, from Evanescence's Lacrymosa, in fact...

Sorry to double post, but Drama, those songs rocked! The first was good for laughs, mostly, but the second caught his mood perfectly! I need to look up the lyrics to get a better feel of it, but good choice all around!:)
