In a word: rubbish.

This book is alive. It speaks to me. It tells me everything about God.

I know God through His Word. I know Jesus through His Word. That is how I know them.

You cannot know God through feelings, you cannot know God through reason: you know God through faith and faith comes through hearing, and hearing by the WORD OF GOD.

Cheers,
|ZZ|
Amen. His word when spoken, is no more devoid of it's power when it is written. Jesus said the words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, they are life. His Words are more than just words for reading. His word is meant for the heart (spirit) of man. And the catylist for bringing it as life in you when written, is the indwelling Holy Spirit. It brings it just as alive to you, as if He was speaking them to your spirit, face to face. What is doing the actual "hearing?"..it's not about your physical ears..many heard Jesus with their physical ears, yet understood nothing. and all have physical ears, but not all have spiritual ears for hearing and understanding. IF this wasn't the case, how could the deaf receive revelation through sign language? They get just as saved because the Spirit revealed these truths to them even through sign language, and they can't physically hear a thing. This comes by revelation by the Spirit to our spirit to bring His Word alive in us.

So true ZZub, God will meet us where we are at and there is the voice of God and the Spirit speaking but the Word teachs us about God. We are priests and kings but how can we learn how God expects priests to act and enter in without the Word? How do we know our inheritance without the Word? What does God expect from Kings? How do we learn the very nature of God without the Word and on and on. The Word is living and breathing for those who want to learn, no it is not the whole thing but it is a great beginning and sadly for many an end as they go no further.

You are speaking of knowledge, which is NOT a relationship.

No talking to God is a relationship, the Spirit leading is a relatiuo0nship and the bible is our guide as to wjhat pleases the father and how we are to act. I am talking a personal relationship not head knowledge, the bible will only give an unbeliever head knowledge but to a believer it comes alive.

The Holy Spirit was a metaphor?

The Holy Spirit convicts people to turn to God. We all were once spiritually deaf until the Holy Spirit convicted us to repent and made us hear God spiritually. Hebrews 2:4
God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Hebrews 3:7-8
So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."

Hebrews 10:15-16
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds."

It is IMPOSSIBLE to have a relationship with God through scripture alone. That is only the accumulation of knowledge and has nothing to do with a relationship. You can not even know him through scripture alone. All you can have through scripture alone is knowledge of what has been written about him. And what has been written about him is a grain of sand compared to what he is.
I am not advocating a relationship through scripture alone, sorry if I came across that way. What I am saying is that scripture can reveal much about God that will assist in the relationship we have. In fact I would argue that a relationship with God that is just through scripture is not a relationship at all. I won't know everything about my car just by reading the manual but I will better understand my car by reading the manual. To bring that to a higher level I actually need to get in my car and use it. The same is true of God in a metaphorical sense. I can better understand him through scripture but I can only really know him thorugh personal intimacy. Sorry for any confusion :)

In a nutshell we are to become like God in character - and we can better do that if we draw on ALL the sorces available to us. Scripture is one of those sources and one that we are commanded to be in DAILY.

But it takes a real demon or a moron to think that he gets knowledge that does not come inline with scripture. That person might then think he gets messages from God because his head nods or his leg jumps up and down.

Real devil stuff.

Totally agree - we can think we hear stuff from God but our true place of comparison is the scripture. If it doesn't line up with scripture we need to really think about what we are hearing. But how would we know to question it if we are not in scripture?

Or if that spirit told us that we were beyond scripture?

There are demon possessed people, perhaps even on this forum, who think that.

Yes - you will find them everywhere. But is it not scripture lining up with us hearing the word of God that reveals not only who they are but what to do in those situations?

You think so? Then why will so many be deluded in the end times? Because they don't have the scriptures?

Just asking. :)

Partly that because if they take what others say about scripture to be gospel truth without looking things up for themselves they are more at risk but also through lacking that relationship with God which would have given them the warning signs before they were misled. Remember people who are being misled don't know that they are being misled or they wouldn't be misled. (try saying that one ten times quickly :D)

I think people believe before their heads actually realize it. By the time we are conciously aware of the elements of faith, it has already arrived. What most of us call a "decision for Christ" is actually merely our minds trying to play catch up with something our hearts have already settled in and believed. Scriptures are important indeed. They help us flesh out those things the Spirit has imparted into our spirits. They are the medium of communication whereby we articulate and testify our faith. We use scripture to clothe our faith with words of doctrine. But the faith always comes first, faith comes by the living Spirit speaking words into our spirits, and faith gives reality unto a confession. But the faith always comes first.
