i believe Lot was counted as "righteous" by God for Abraham's sake. He also was grieved about Sodom. Yet he was sorta' "split"....he apparently married a woman there and his two daughters married men who could've cared less about God because they were perfectly happy there and didn't take Lot seriously when he told them they had to flee....

yes, many believers today are in the same dilemma as Lots conflict....there are many, possibly unrecognized ways that even believers "sacrifice" their children to the various "gods" of this world.

Yes, TillICollapse, I've seen a lot of parents "sacrifice" their children to the gods of this world, for example I know a lot of parents who have put their kids into college at, like, 13 for the bragging rights and then the kids flunk. And parents who put their kids in all these sports, and then the kids have trophies but no free time.

And brinny, you're right that Lot offering his daughters can't be much worse than abortion. Whew, all of that makes me shudder.

And I really don't get the part about Lot's daughters getting Lot drunk and having sex with him. I know I really want to have children, but I'm not sure I could ever get that desperate!
I don't think those children's descendants were blessed. Weren't the Moabites and Ammonites tribes the Israelites fought with?

I had to Google what happened to Lot's descendants. Ready for a shock (it was to me) ?

"According to the Bible, Jesus is a descendant of Lot through David's great-grandmother Ruth, who is descended from Moab, Lot's son through one of his daughters."

what do you make of that?

Ruth represents redemption in action, as Boaz represents Christ so to speak, as Christ embraces His Bride (those redeemed by His grace). Boaz "redeemed" Ruth and took her as his own. It's a beautiful story.

Getting back to the Moabites and Ammonites, it seems rather striking that Ruth forsook her own people and their gods when she accompanied and stayed with Naomi and said these eternally significant words:

"And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:" ~Ruth 1:16

Idk honestly. I don't know if it's purposeful concerning lineage or not. As in, it HAD to be a link to Lot in that fashion. Idk.

Jesus is known as the "Son of David" though, not Lot. These are thoughts off the top of my head.

ETA: Oh I didn't realize you were speaking of the link to Ruth ... I'd have to re-read Ruth as I'm rusty on the story. That verse though is not foreign to me haha Hmm ...

I should have remembered that Ruth was a Moabite!

Although the Israelites did dislike her because she was Moabite.

I think Jesus is referred to as the son of David because David is a little bit of a symbol of the nation of Israel. David was also one of it's greatest kings, so "Son of David" put in the idea that Jesus had inherited David's kingdom. It also put him descended from royalty.

yes, and isn't it interesting that Boaz chose Ruth, against all odds.....apparently he was the richest and most eligible bachelor in town and he went to great odds to secure Ruth as his chosen one. I'm also thinkin' that he must have been a man of great character because what he most noticed about Ruth is how diligently she worked in the fields and how she was so loyal to Naomi and stayed with her.

Sorry to interrupt with yesterday's chapter again but maybe what Lot was doing wasn't as bad as it sounds. If the visitors were angels it would have been much worse for the Sodomites to have sex with them rather than his daughters and by offering them he was protecting the angels. If you think of it that way it sounds a noble thing to do.

I wonder why Abraham decided to do that to Sarah a second time? Also God seemed quite angry with Abimelek when he didn't know he had done anything wrong. And if Sarah was around 90 by this point what was he planning to do?

Apparently Sarah was still very beautiful even at 90....and what i noticed is that Sarah was Abraham's sister but maybe half sister? What i find eye opening is that God Himself spoke to the king to keep him from having relations with Sarah. That's amaaaaazing that God moooved so powerfully.

HOW did Abraham KNOW how to circumcise? If you really think about it, would YOU wanna try that? lol...I know I wouldn't...seems so easy in text but to seriously give it thought, huh uh...not me...

What struck me in today's chapters is the importance of water. I've lived in an arid climate for a few years, but the lack of natural water wasn't a big deal, thanks to modern plumbing. I think a lot of people now days don't really see how big a deal having water or not having water was to the ancient Israelites and Egyptians. It kind of puts a different spin on Christ being the "living water" when you think about water being an important commodity like Genesis 21 shows.

Haha I'm reminded of a small island I lived on for a bit off the southern coast of Chile. We had no motorized land vehicles, or running water: everything was ox-sled, or boats. Anyways, for water, we used wells which were often filled with frogs, bird poop, dead things. We added a small amount of bleach to the water to drink it. We would also carry old coke bottles to the beach (2 mile walk one way) and fill them with water as it ran off the side of the beach cliffs out of the water table. It was filtered naturally that way, and the rocks and ferns it drizzled down often filtered it a bit more. Now, the well water was disgusting of course ... but that fresh water that ran out the sides of the cliffs was the best tasting water you've ever put in your mouth lol.

Modern plumbing, access to fresh and drinkable water ... man it's such a luxury lol.
