Well think of wedding vows, we say them before God and they are to be taken very seriously.. Though I do think many don't take them seriously enough these days and they don't feel they are saying before God but that's another discussion.

Interesting chapter.

Here's a very enlightening commentary. It was a sin of complicity on the pRt of Reuben and Gad; they were willing to settle for good enough and not Devine God's glory as promised. That really resonates with me. Before I accepted Christ as my saviour, I was willing to settle for good enough, I didn't want God's Devine glory. It took reading the book of Revelations- in a day, I couldn't put the Bible down, I had a strong need to read it- for me to realize everything I thought I knew about God, death and life, and life after death was all wrong. I asked for God's forgiveness for my sins and for Him to be my Lord and Saviour - that's my testimony, in a nutshell. Thanks for listening.

Yes it is a good commentary. I like David Guzik's commentaries better than the other that I've read because he brings it to "how does this apply to me now?" Or at least that's how I feel. I could give links to a couple of commentaries and you could read more than one if you'd like? I don't mind. I usually read at least two before I post one.

This is an excellent commentary, especially the detail given on why the Caananites needed to be driven out totally.

I agree. I have found all the commentaries to be helpful. I now understand why God things seemed harsh; He did it for the good of His people.

Chapter 34 reminds me of this verse:

"the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just." ~Proverbs 13:22

Interesting that these tribes have already received their inheritance and will not cross over into the land of Canaan:

14 For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance:

15 The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the sunrising.
