Josiah needlessly starts a war with Egypt

2 Chronicles Chapter 35

The King of Egypt went out to fight with a kingdom situated by the Euphrates river.

Josiah decided to join in and fight against the King of Egypt.

The King of Egypt sent ambassadors to Josiah saying “What have I to do with thee thou King of Judah. I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.” (Verse 21)

A prophet also told Josiah that God said he must not to fight against Egypt (Verse 22)

Josiah ignored God’s advice and was killed by an arrow in the following battle against Egypt.

Josiah was a much loved king and was mourned throughout Jerusalem and all Judah.

When Josiah died his son Jehoahaz became King of Judah (for three months).

Why oh why did Josiah ignore what he KNEW God was telling him? It's tragic.

Nevertheless, Josiah was a much beloved king and he DID love God...he was very much honored and beloved and was given an honorable burial.

One more chapter to go of the Book of Chronicles

Josiah was 8 when he became king and he reigned for 31 years in Jerusalem.

Josiah did that which was right in the sight of the LORD. He removed the high places, the carved images, the molten images, the groves and the altars to Baal.

Josiah did so much that was good in his 31 years as king of Judah.

But after all that time worshiping God Josiah then ignored the words of God's prophet, who told him not to go to war with Egypt.

Dont miss tomorrows final installment of the story.

In the final chapter of the Book of Chronicles the Kingdom of Judah is destroyed.

Brinny

We are not told why Josiah started a war with Egypt.

But we are told that a prophet of God told him not to fight Egypt.

Jerusalem is captured by Nebuchadenezzsar King of Babylon

2 Chronicles Chapter 36

Jehoahaz

When Josiah was killed by the King of Egypt, his son Jehoahaz reigned in Jerusalem.

Jehoahaz was 23 when he came to the throne, but he only reigned for 3 months.

The King of Egypt defeated Jehoahaz at Jerusalem, and took Jehoahaz prisoner to Egypt.

The King of Egypt made Jehoahaz’s brother Johoiakim king in Jerusalem.

Johoiakim

Johoiakim was 25 when he became king and he reigned for 11 years.

Johoiakim did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

Nebuchadenezzsar King of Babylon defeated Johoiakim and took him prisoner to Babylon.

Nebuchadenezzsar took all the temple treasures and put them in his own temple in Babylon.

When Johoiakim died his son Jehoiachin reigned in Jerusalem.

Jehoiachin

Jehoiachin was 8 years old when he began to reign, and only reigned for 3 months.

Jehoiachin did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

Nebuchadenezzsar took Jehoiachin prisoner to Babylon.

Nebuchadenezzsar put Jehoiachin’s brother Zedekiah on the throne of Judah and Jerusalem.

Zedekiah

Zedekiah was 21 when he began to reign, and he reigned for 11 years in Jerusalem.

Zedekiah did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and ignored the prophet Jeremiah.

Zedekiah caused the people to transgress and commit abominations.

God sent messengers to Zedekiah and Judah. All God’s messengers were despised, mocked, abused and ignored. This made God very angry. Therefore God sent the Chaldees to punish Judah.

There was much slaughter. The temple was burned. The palaces were burned. The wall around Jerusalem was smashed down.

The King of the Chaldees took what remained of the tribe of Judah as slaves to Babylon.

Today we read that the Jews were carried off to captivity into Babylon. Zedkiah was the last king of Judah.

This is the end of the story. There would be no more Kings of Judah.

Brinny,

In todays story the Babylonians destroy the Kingdom of Judah for ever.

But in the previous chapter Egypt wanted to fight a war with Babylon.

And God told the King of Egypt to make haste to fight Babylon, but not fight against Judah. God told Egypt to bypass Judah.

Josiah needlessly attacked the Egyptians against God's warnings not to.

If Egypt had destroyed the Kingdom of Babylon it could have saved Judah from any future attacks from Babylon.

Maybe if Egypt could have been left alone to fight Babylon, it might have changed the whole course of Jewish history.

I am thinking that God had a plan for Egypt to destroy Babylon in the previous chapter. I am thinking that Josiah spoilt that plan by needlessly attacking Egypt.

God even told Egypt to bypass Judah and make haste to attack Babylon. Josiah intervened against God's orders and saved Babylon from the Egyptians.

I am thinking that if Josiah had obeyed God's orders, then the Kingdom of Babylon would not have even been there.

God speaks to King Cyrus of Persia

Ezra Chapter 1

The Jews spent 70 years in captivity in Babylon. During that period the Kingdom of Babylon had become part of a huge Persian Empire. Then after 70 years of slavery for the Jews, God spoke to King Cyrus.

The LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus King of Persia, so that he made a proclamation. Cyrus made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and he put it in writing. Thus saith Cyrus King of Persia.

The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth: and he hath charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

Who is there among you of all his people? His God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel.

King Cyrus gave back all the temple treasures that had been stolen 70 years earlier by Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon.

People made gifts towards rebuilding the temple of goods and cattle. The total number of items collected towards building the temple, included 5,400 gold and silver vessels.

Josiah messed up big time here.......he actually dismissed what God told him and it was clear WHAT God told him. It seems he had a pre-mature death because of his disobedience. God told him to step back and leave all the matters to Him, and Josiah foolishly step into what he was NEVER meant to be a part of, and it cost him his life, and as you said, changed the course of history.

That's incredible, how God worked in of all people, the heart of Persia's King Cyrus.....

precious.

Brinny,

Ezra is not a book that is widely read in the churches.

It is certainly news to me that God stirred up the the spirit of Cyrus the King of Persia to make that proclamation.

I also find it very surprising that it was actually Cyrus they King of Persia's idea to build a new temple to God in Jerusalem.

I was not actually aware that there were two temples. The first one being built by Solomon. The second temple started by Cyrus King of Persia.

The fact that Cyrus made that proclamation about building a temple suggests to me that Cyrus believed that the LORD God of Israel, was God.

All this I learned from the first chapter of the Book of Ezra.

Amazing !!!!!

Joy as the Jews return to Judah

Ezra Chapter 2

70 years previously Nebuchadnezzar had carried all the Jews off into captivity in Babylon.

The Book of Ezra Chapter 2 tells us the numbers of people that returned.

The Book o Ezra also says from what city those people originally came form.

There was great rejoicing when the foundations were finished for the new temple

Ezra Chapter 3

Verse 3 says that on their return to Judah the Jews built an altar to God and burnt offerings to God every day. The Jews also offered sacrifices on the new moons and on feast days (Verse 4).

The workers were paid out of a grant that they had been given from the King of Persia (Verse 7).

It took over a year to lay the foundations to the temple in Jerusalem, and when the foundations were laid they celebrated.

The priests played their trumpets and the Levites played the cymbals. They sang and gave praise unto the LORD, for he is good, and his mercy endureth for ever, unto Israel.

And the people gave a great shout when they praised the LORD, because the foundations of the temple were laid.

Some of the very old men had seen the first temple, and when they saw the foundations of the new temple were laid they wept, and shouted aloud with joy.

Verse 3 says that the Jews feared the local people now living in the land of Judah. This was because the Jews had been away for 70 years in captivity in Babylon, and while they were away people of other nations had occupied their land, and made it their home.

The fact that fear was mentioned in Verse 3 suggests that not all the local people welcomed the return of the Jews.

Verse 13 says that the local people were mystified by the celebrations regarding the laying of the temple foundations, and did not understand what all the weeping and shouting was all about.

To sum up the situation then, the Jew was now a stranger on the shore, even in his very own homeland of Israel, he was not welcome.

There is a lovely old song by a group called BoneyM.
The song is about the Jews living in captivity in Babylon.

"Rivers Of Babylon"

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.

When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Required from us a song
Now how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land

Let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight

Liz Mitchell

Liz Mitchell is the the lead singer of BoneyM. She is a beautiful black woman. I have seen here on television talk shows and she is a genuine Christian. She was well aware of the deep religious connotations that the words of her song had for Christians.

I have just listened to "By the Rivers of Babylon" on youtube, and it perfectly captures the story of the Jews living in captivity as described in the Book of Ezra.

The Jews were strangers in Babylon. Then when the Jews returned to their homeland of Judah, they were strangers again. They had been in captivity for 70 years, and during that time new nations had occupied the land of their forefathers.

Stranger on the shore

There was a beautiful old tune by Acker Bilk called "Stranger on the Shore"

It perfectly captures the mood of being alone in a strange land. It is played on the clarinet by Acker Bilk and it is available on youtube.

I believe they would have sung these words as they marched along.

We’re marching to Zion,
Beautiful, beautiful Zion;
We’re marching upward to Zion,
The beautiful city of God.

I have always thought that the song DOWN BY THE RIVER SIDE was a song about the Jews in captivity along the banks of the Babylon rivers of Eurphrates and Tigris. The Jewish slaves would have sung sad songs about their captivity in Babylon. This song was a sad negro spiritual and sung by black slaves.

Down By the Riverside

Gonna lay down my burden,
Down by the riverside,
Down by the riverside,
Down by the riverside.
Gonna lay down my burden,
Down by the riverside,
Down by the riverside.

Chorus:
I ain't gonna study war no more,
study war no more,
ain't gonna study war no more.
I ain't gonna study war no more,
study war no more,
ain't gonna study oh war no more.

Other possible first lines to start the verses

  • Gonna try on my starry crown
  • Gonna put on my golden shoes
  • Gonna talk with the Prince of Peace
