The whole of Judah were greatly blessed by God and prospered

2 Chronicles Chapter 31

After their visit to eat the Passover with Hezekiah in Jerusalem, many of the northern Israelite people returned to the tradition of worshiping the one true God.

Many of the idols of Baal were smashed, and the groves to Baal cut down, in the areas of Ephraim and Manasseh.

The people of Jerusalem gave tithes to the priests and Levites and all things brought they in abundantly.

So much so that new stores had to be built of accommodate all the tithes and offerings.

The tithes and offerings were so great that they could be distributed to the whole of the tribe of Levites and still there was plenty.

And this did Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the LORD his God.

And in every work that Hezekiah began in the service of the house of God, and the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and Hezekiah prospered.

There is no doubt that Hezekiah was one of the truely great kings of Judah. He loved God all through his reign, and this led to wealth, fame and riches for himself and great prosperity for the Jews.

The Angel of the LORD destroys the mighty Assyrian army.

2 Chronicles Chapter 32

At this time the northern Kingdom of Israel no longer existed. The old area of Israel no longer had kings of their own. Samaria was now part of a huge Assyrian Empire.

Therefore the mighty Assyrian King thought the little Kingdom of Judah would be easily defeated.

King Hezekiah of Judah encouraged the Jews by telling them that the LORD our God was on our side, and would help us, and lead us to victory against the mighty King of Assyria.

Hezekiah prayed to God for help, and the LORD sent an Angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the King of Assyria.

The angel of the LORD killed 145,000 Assyrian soldiers. (2 Kings 19v35)

The King of Assyria was defeated by the Angel of the LORD. The King of Assyria retreated in disorder back to his own land. He was a disgraced man. When he got home he was murdered by his own family.

God continued to protect Judah from all attackers. Hezekiah grew very rich and also the whole land was blessed by God and prospered greatly.

Hezekiah fell sick and was told that he was dying by the prophet Isaiah. Hezekiah prayed to God for help and God healed Hezekiah of his sickness. Isaiah told Hezekiah that God would extended his life an additional 15 years (2 Kings 20v6).

The King of Babylon heard about the wealth of Hezekiah, and sent letters of friendship. Hezekiah welcomed the ambassadors from Babylon and showed them all his wealth and all the temple treasures.

Isaiah the prophet said that God was angry at what Hezekiah done. Isaiah warned that the knowledge given to the ambassadors of Babylon would one day attract them back to Jerusalem as invaders.

All the wealth of Judah and all the people would one day be carried off into slavery in Babylon.
(2 kings 20v17)

How be it in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
(2 Chronicles 32v31)

100 years later the Babylonians would invade Judah. It seems that Hezekiah made a mistake in being so welcoming to the ambassadors from Babylon and showing them all the riches of the land.

Hezekiah was 25 when he became King of Judah. Hezekiah’s reign lasted 29 years.
(2 Chronicles 29v1)

Hezekiah ended his life as a man of great wealth, fame and influence. Hezekiah loved God, and God blessed Hezekiah in every way.

When Hezekiah died, his son Manesseh became king of Judah.
(2 Chronicles Chapter 32v33)

Yes Hezekiah encouraged the northern tribes to worship God and smash the idols of Baal

This verse was kind'a precious to me because it looks like Hezekiah is conscious of the need to encourage the priests and the Levites, and that he had a "heart" for them and that is a very PRECIOUS thing to do:

HERE is the key to Hezekiah's righteousness before God..he TRUSTED God with ALL his heart...how delightful is THAT?

7 Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:

8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

Hezekiah was a very wise king.

What a duo in verse 20, awesome!:

20 And for this cause Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.

Isn't this PRECIOUS, in verses 21 and 22?

21 And the Lord sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

Uh-oh here's a glitch (oh why, Hezekiah, why? Yer breakin' my heart, mon):

23 And many brought gifts unto the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

24 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the Lord: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.

25 But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

Praise God that he came to his senses, here in verse 26:

26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

King Hezekiah was a very good and much beloved king and was honored exceedingly at his death and he was given a great and honorable burial.

2 Chronicles Chapter 33

On the death of Hezekiah his son Manasseh became king of Judah.

Manasseh was 12 years old when he became king, and reigned for 55 years.

Manasseh did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD. He built again the high places. He built altars to Baal. He built groves for the worship of Baal.

Manasseh used enchantments, familiar spirits, witches, wizards and even put idols in the temple.

God was angry. The Assyrians attacked and took Manasseh prisoner to Babylon.

When Manasseh was a prisoner in Babylon he prayed to God.

God listened to Manasseh. Despite all the evil things Manasseh had done. God still heard his prayer.

God returned Manasseh to Jerusalem. Manasseh now new that the LORD was the one true God of Israel.

He took the idol out of the temple, and he removed all the altars that he had built to Baal in Jerusalem.

Manasseh ordered the people of Judah to worship and serve the LORD God of Israel.

When Manasseh died his son Amon became King of Judah.

Amon was 22 years old and reigned for only 2 years in Jerusalem.

Amon did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

He sacrificed to idols. Amon worshiped and served idols. Amon trespassed more and more.

Amon was murdered by his own servants, in his own house, after only 2 years as King of Judah.

The murderers were executed, and then Amon’s very young son Josiah became King of Judah.

Josiah was a good King of Judah and worshiped God

After the death of Amon his son Josiah became the King of Judah.

Josiah was 8 when he became king and he reigned for 31 years in Jerusalem.

Josiah did that which was right in the sight of the LORD. He removed the high places, the carved images, the molten images, the groves and the altars to Baal.

Josiah then repaired the temple. A book was found of old Jewish prophases. Josiah was concerned because the book prophesied that God would punish the Jews for worshiping idols.

A prophetess told Josiah that he and Judah would be safe during his lifetime because he worshiped God.

Josiah read the words of the book to the Jews in the temple and they made a covenant to heed the warnings within the book, and only to worship the one true God of Israel.

And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.

Josiah was only 8 when he became King of Judah, and he reigned for 31 years in Jerusalem.

He may have started very young but he was a good king and worshiped God.

We are getting near to the end of the book of 2 Chronicles now, with just two chapters to go.

During the next two chapters the Kingdom of Judah is destroyed and the Jews are carried off into slavery in Babylon by the evil Nebuchadnezzar.

After that we are on to a totally new story about a priest called Ezra.

Josiah needlessly starts a war with Egypt

2 Chronicles Chapter 35

The King of Egypt went out to fight with a kingdom situated by the Euphrates river.

Josiah decided to join in and fight against the King of Egypt.

The King of Egypt sent ambassadors to Josiah saying “What have I to do with thee thou King of Judah. I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.” (Verse 21)

A prophet also told Josiah that God said he must not to fight against Egypt (Verse 22)

Josiah ignored God’s advice and was killed by an arrow in the following battle against Egypt.

Josiah was a much loved king and was mourned throughout Jerusalem and all Judah.

When Josiah died his son Jehoahaz became King of Judah (for three months).

But after all that time worshiping God Josiah then ignored the words of God's prophet, who told him not to go to war with Egypt.

What i find most interesting is here in verse 2 where DAVID is recognized as Josiah's father, and Amon is not even mentioned. My hunch is that this is a "spiritual" connotation, and a shining example of how God CAN bring forth life from death (Amon represents spiritual death and destruction...David represents spiritual LIFE and God's extraordinary favor)
