Battle of Ai

But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan took of the accursed thing, and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel.

Joshua 7 verse 1

This caused the Israeli attack on Ai to fail. God was angry with what Achan had done in Jericho. God refused to help the Israelites in the next battle against Ai.

Achan disobeyed the strict instructions about the Battle of Jericho.
Because of this the Israelites first attack was defeated by the men of Ai

And all Israel stoned him with stones.

Joshua 7 verse 25

God refused to help the Children of Israel until Achan was punished.
This is why the Israelites first attack on Ai failed.

Battle of Ai

Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

Joshua 7 verse 3

The Israeli spies came back to Joshua as suggested that tiny AI would be an easy push over victory compared to the very highly fortified city of Jericho.

Re: chapter 5, this verse stood out for me:

verse 1: And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

Just how many kings did the Amorites and the Caananites have? And it's amaaaaazing that God put fear in their hearts of the Israelites? God "spooked", them, mon......

...and here in verse 2 where God tells Joshua to circumcise the Israelites......there's some real parallels to Moses and Joshua here....both leaders of the Israelites and both Godly men, and both carrying out God's command for the Israelites to be circumcised....

verse 2: At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

And whoa! Verses 13-15...this is PIVOTAL!!!! Just WHO was this with the drawn sword?

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

The commentary was ENORMOUSLY helpful here, because it explained the details and clues that indicated WHO this was with His Sword drawn. It was God Himself! So HERE we see that Joshua ALSO saw God face to face, just as Moses had. How glorious is that?

And back to verses 9-12...here is where God stops providing the manna because they are gonna eat of the fruit of their land that God had claimed for them. In a sense, this first meal of the fruit of the land is sorta' like a celebration, and what a glorious celebration it is.

9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.

12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

Thank you. This thread has helped me enormously...it is SUCH a blessing...it's helping me FOCUS and not be distracted and ferget to continue on reading some books of the Bible that i would've never ever gone near before.

The plan was to trick the fighting men to come out of Ai, and draw then into an ambush set by Joshua.

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way.

Joshua 8 verse 20

The fighting men of Ai fell into the ambush set by Joshua.
The whole Ai army was caught in the ambush giving total victory to Joshua.

The Battle of Ai

So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai, and chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

Joshua 8 verse 3

These 30,000 men were to attack the town, when the fighting men of Ai persued a retreating Joshua. This was part of a very complicated ambush that Joshua had designed for the defeat of the army of Ai.

This stood out for me (verse 2). The "fear of the Lord" is perhaps one of the least understood, yet of the utmost crucial-ness to a living, breathing, relationship and intimacy with the living God. All throughout His Word it is repeated, and all throughout His Word it is emphasized as a characteristic of Godly men and women who "walked with God". It is a "key" to why God described Job as He did. It is a GLORIOUS exchange of us, God's "created" ones towards their Creator. And is therefore possibly very precious to God, our Creator. Inexplicable grace and promises follow to those who grasp the wisdom of "fearing God". This verse is a precious "key" to "pleasing" and "blessing" God: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." ~Proverbs 9:10

Verse 2:

2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Joahua 9 verse 13

The people of Gibeon heard about what happend at Jericho and Ai and wanted to make peace with Joshua.

Gibeon was only 20 miles from Jericho but they pretended they had travelled far to meet Joshua.

Very soon afterwards Joshua found that he had been tricked.

But Joshua kept to the peace treaty because Joshua had sworn by the Lord God of Israel.

The Book of Joshua chapter 9 tells us that the Gibeonites showed wisdom in making a peace treaty with the Israelites. The Gibeonites were the only city to make a peace treaty with Joshua. The Gibeonites fought with the Israelites in the next battle which was outside Gibeon. The next battle was against all the other cities round about Gibeon.

Verse 1 was confusing at first:

"But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel."

Then as i kept reading, i realized that Achan had sinned GREATLY. Incredulous! After ALL that GOd had done, Achan's heart was NOT for God nor did he align with God and stand in agreement with God's covenant, but despised God. He brought him and his entire household to death, for he was under judgement along with his family and they were to be stoned and burned them with fire....

and it says that there is, unto this very day a heap of stones as a memorial there. I looked for pictures, but i couldn't find anything definitive.

The commentary was very helpful for this very difficult chapter.

I acually feel quite sorry for Achan. He found a pile of silver and a wedge of gold. This would have made him a rich man. It had no apparent owner. All he had to do was pick it up and put it in his pocket. Achan would then have been rich for the rest of his life. Achan was tempted.

But this went against Gods strict instructions.
Achan paid with his life for this moment of weakness.

Brinny we might have to do without the commentaries from bcmom.

Achan surely did.....he and his entire family paid dearly.
