"Checkmate."
Bob sighed, gazing down at the board in despair. His king had been caught behind a row of pawns by an unexpected queen move. He never could see these things. But wait - his rook could block. It would even be threatening the queen!
Bob shook his head, and move the rook. His opponent, a tall, thin man named Albert, sighed tersely and captured the rook. "checkmate."
Bob looked longingly at the other end of the board, where his rook and bishop were all set to windmill away all of Albert's pawns. Besides those two pieces and a bunch of pawns, he only had his other bishop...
Bod moved his bishop into the path of the queen. "Not yet."
Albert grimaced and captured the bishop, knocking it off the board with his queen. "There."
Bob looked over the board. Yep, that was checkmate. The queen was only two steps away from his king, and there was nothing that could capture the queen or move to the intervening space. Bob looked to his left, where the barber was halfway through cutting the hair of a new customer. Bob was next in line.
With a sigh, Bob swept the pieces off the chessboard. "How about a game of checkers?"
Albert grinned. "Sure." He was next in line after Bob, the barbershop being empty besides Albert, Bob, the barber and the person in the barber chair. Until the current customer was done, there would be nothing to do but play games with Bob.
The two players began setting up the checkerboard.
