The Book of Life

Long ago, the Israelites went to the Promised Land. They say to make the journey easier for them, God created the Book of Life for the Israelites. The book gave them the power to control their enemies without harming them, and allowed it to kill them if their enemies still resisted.

When the Israelites disobeyed God, he took the book away from them, and sealed it in an ancient Aztec temple--when the Spaniards came to the New World in search of gold, they instead found the book, but a trap caused the Spaniards to die, and leave the book at the camp.

Many years passed, and people feared to be in posession of the book. People who had touched it said they saw an Angel of Death appear to them, saying it was cursed.

Now, in 2008, it is held in the very back of a strange bookshop--a bookshop that our "hero" comes across one day, coming home from school. Drawn in by the cover of the book, he uses the books power to rid the world of evil......

Edward Renault sat in the third seat of the last row in the classroom. He stared lazily out the window. He was so bored....

"Renault!" a voice shouted. He felt a piece of paper hit him.

"Focus! We need you to make the highest scores on the exit level exams this year, so get to it! Answer this equation!!" the teacher, Mr. Sanderson said.

"Class was so boring today...." he muttered under his breath to no one in particular, as he carfully put his books away, preparing to leave school.

Yuzuki Etsuko stayed in her seat in the corner of the classroom, putting her books in her bag. She saw a couple of students whispering something to one another and glancing at her. One of them grinned and they exited the classroom. They were planning some mean prank or planning to beat her up as usual. Yuzuki had no friends, no one at all. Everyone always picked on her. She stood up and exited the classroom, just looking down at the ground.

Edward watched Yuzuki leave. He sighed. It seemed like the whole world was always against her. He didn't know exactly, but he felt something was really wrong in her life. Besides, everyone picking on her wouldn't help her, either, and Edward didn't want her to come to school one day and pull off the deadliest school shooting in American history.

"Um...Yuzuki. Mr. Sanderson seemed really pleased today when you answered that equation correctly. Maybe you should be on the Mathletes team? It would be a good experience for you, I think..." Edward said. He nodded at her, smiled, and then walked down the hall.

"And what are they planning to do me..." Yuzuki replied. Considering no one had ever been nice to her, this kind of answer was natural.

Kennedie Lancer yawn as she exited her geometry class. The teacher had been reviewing today so Edie had fallen asleep. She sleepily wandered down the hall, her long blonde hair in her face. Pausing at her locker, she took off her gloves and spun the combination. Edie looked down the hall towards where Edward would be coming and waved when she saw him. "Hey Eddy!"

Deedra sighed as she walked to the Juice Bar to begin her shift. It was always busiest after school, which at least paid the bills at $7/hr, plus tips. However, it may not be enough to fix her car. Why had her parents decided to go on a cruise right before her car broke down? She took out a pen and wrote "ask for overtime" on her arm, so as not to forget.

She opened the employee entrance, clocked in, put on her apron, and stood at her station.
"Ready for the after-school rush, Dee?" Pamela, a co-worker, asked
"Only if they're big tippers."Deedra answered, half joking.
Pamela chuckled. "Yeah, wouldn't it be great if they were millionaires?"
"If only, if only." She replied, knowing she'll probly get $10 in tips today.

Edward's eyes fell when he heard Edie call him "Eddy". It was confusing, because she requested he call her "Edie", and she called him "Eddy", as well. They were both Eddy. But, Edward preffered to be called by his full name. He was intelligent, and he wanted a name that reflected that. Besides, it prevented confusion with other people. Edward had fallen out as a name in recent years.

"Haven't I told you not to call me that?" Edward asked. "YOUR Edie; not me." he emphasized. He adjusted his bag over his shoulder as he waited for her.

The two had always been close friends....they lived next door to each other for all seventeen years of their teenage lives, and Edward's parents would remind the two of them how they used to swim naked in Edward's kiddie pool when they were little. Edward had always screamed at them, and thrown whatever was handy. Edward noticed at least once that Edie blushed.

"Are we still going to that book store for....whatever it was you wanted...." Edward drawled. It wasn't the fact he didn't want to go, it was just, knowing Edie, she was probably looking for something out of the ordinary. And, if he knew her well, she would drag him into whatever it was she was looking for.

((No no Edward was being nice to her, and of course she doesn't know it, and she said something....and for some reason Ninji didn't reply ))

(((She walked off. I thought she was just talking to herself when she said "What are they planning?" Like Edward would knopw. )))

((No she said it to him and needs to walk down the hall anyway to get to her locker))

((K well let's pretend she just murmured it and walked off :shrug: I'll put that other plot into place. okay, this opening is for Ninji, no one else.))

Yuzuki went to her locker and put most of her books in. She then shut it. Three students surrounded her. Two boys and a girl. "Hey look it's the lone ranger..." One said. The three "traded" insults about Yuzuki. Yuzuki ignored them, which made them mad. A rather tall boy with brown hair shoved her painfully back against her locker.

Edward heard the clanging of the locker.

"Crap...They're at it again, picking on Yuzuki..." Edward said. This time, he would do something.

"Edie, come on. We have to help her."

Edward walked brisquely, but gracefully down the hallway. The boy who was pinning backed up, and walked forward again, trying to ram her with his elbow.

Edward immediately positioned himself between them, and, with one swift motion, threw the boy's arm away from Yuzuki.

"I wouldn't want to do that if I were you...." Edward said.

"An' why not?" the large boy drawled. His cohorts, a twig-thin boy and a girl with bouncy red curls flanked him.

"Because, as alone as she may be, there are others who will not permit you to commit such an act of violence...." Edward said, undoing the buttons on the cuffs of his sleeves. The boy just stared at him.

"I'm sorry. I forgot your not quite as intelligent as I am....I'll dumb it down for you....Get out of here, or I'm going to kick your butt, no matter how fat you are,and let the janitors clean you off the floor." Edward said, his eyes blazing at the boy.

The boy growled, motioning for Twig Boy to attack Edward. The boy lunged quickly, spreading his arms like a hawk to grab Edward. Edward ducked underneath his right arm, and jabbed into his armpit, causing the boy to clutch his arm from the sudden numbness. At the loss of balance, Edward shoved him onto the floor.

The large boy growled, and charged towards Edward with his whole body.

Just then, the principle showed up. "What is going on here?" he roared.

"It was all Edward!!" the large boy tried to explain, pointing innocently at his friend on the floor. The principle looked to Edward.

"These three were picking on Yuzuki for whatever reason. When they didn't get a response, he started to hit her. I only positioned myself between the two, and responded to attacks made on my person." Edward replied to the principle's glare. The principle regained his ability to speak.

"You three! My office, now!!" he roared. The three bullies sulked as they walked towards the office.

"I don't think they'll want to bother you again, Yuzuki. Me and Edie are going to a bookstore, now. Would you like to go? It's safer than walking home alone..." Edward said.

Yuzuki stared at Edward. "...Why did you do that?" She asked.

A skinny blonde girl tapped her fingers impatiently. "Where is my low-fat peach smoothie?" She demanded loudly.
"Hold on..."Deedra fumbled with the cup, capping it clumsily. She tried to hurry, but it only made her nervous and ungraceful. She slammed the cup down in front of the customer. "Here!" She snapped, with a forced smile. "It's not like you need it, Twig!" She thought, frustrated.
The customer stormed off, leaving another impatient one in her place, a chubby boy this time.
"One jumbo Strawberry shake with whipped cream."He said.
"$5.79, please." She replied.
He puffed up in anger. "It was $5.21 yesterday!"
"It's not my fault. $5.79."
"I only brought $5.50. I can't afford my order!"
"Might I suggest a smaller size?"
"Was that a crack about my weight?"
"No, I-"
But it was too late. He left, almost to tears. The customers that had been behind him started talking at once, taking the obese customer's side.

Deedra groaned, put her elbows on the counter and buried her face in her hands. The day wasn't going well.
"It helps to remain calm, Dee." Pamela commented while giving a customer her change.
"I'm gonna get fired, aren't I?"
"Hard to say, but from the looks of business now, you're in danger."

Right then, Lori, the manager, came out of her office,fully aware of what had happened. "Deedra, if this happens again, you're through here. Starting tommorrow, you're on probation. Try to finish your shift with some dignity. Understood?"
Relieved, Deedra nodded.
"Good. Now tend to your line."

She took a deep breath and turned back to the customer, flushed by the wait.
"My sincere apologies for the wait. What would you like?"

Edie came up behind Edward and propped her elbow on his shoulder. "Because he's a good guy. C'mon, I have to pick up a book, come with us. EDWARD," Edie emphasized his name, "can treat us to some drinks." She smiled kindly, "I like your hair, very Parisian Chic!"
