Most scholars cite the Masoretic Text when relating Biblical history. The Masoretic Text and Septuagint differ on ages for the genealogies of Adam and Shem. The Masoretic Text is best suited for Adam’s descendants, since Methusalah did not survive the flood (Gen. 7:7, 1 Pet. 3:20). However, the Masoretic Text subtracted one hundred years before childbirth from each descendant of Shem, which indicates many died much earlier than their fathers. The Septuagint indicates they outlived their fathers, as would be expected, and places the flood (3326 BC) before the earliest known civilizations (c. 3200 BC), also to be expected. Therefore, the Septuagint is preferred for this case. Citing the Septuagint for Shem's descendants adds about 1,000 years to the account given by the Masoretic Text. Several variations of Biblical timelines exist, but most use archaeological or comparative dates. This timeline uses Biblical dates only.
