It is very hard to retain a Christian faith in the face of rabid fundamentalism.

And there you have it... ecumenicalism in a nutshell :)

The only consolation is that not all fundamentalists are rabid. I have friends that I would describe as fundamentalists (they would probably describe themselves as evangelicals) who are perfectly reasonable people, most of the time. It's impossible (in my experience) to respect the liberal views of other Christians, because notions like ``there is a thread of truth in all interpretations of Christianity'' is inherently a liberal fallacy. The evangelicals have as a central tenet of their belief the assertion that there is only one truth, and they know it because God dictated it into the Bible. So to say to an evangelical ``you should respect my views even though they differ from yours'' is precisely the same as saying ``one of the most important things you believe is wrong''.

My experience is that if you push an evangelical hard enough, you can get him or her to stop being a Christian :( What you can't do is turn an evangelical into a liberal.

Don't be so sure. I started off an evangelical and look at me now...

By the way, it's not only evangelicals who think their version of the Bible is the only true one. Catholics and Orthodox Christians can be just as guilty of thinking they own the right to tell others what to believe...

Who is to say which brand of Christianity is correct when there are so many of them in the NT, e.g. take a look, closely, at 1 & 2 Thessalonians where the writer of 2 Thess is certainly against the writer of 1 Thess and is dead against the theology of the second coming of the 1st! IMHO!

God also dictated all the many variants that there are in the OT & NT as well!

To those of you who have rejected the gospel:

When the Lamb of God returns in glory, then you'll be sorry... where will all your mocking be then, on the great and terrible day of the Lord? While his saints celebrate being forgiven in the kingdom of God with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, what will your mocking mouth say as you are cast out, separated from the God you despise so much?

If you don't want to follow God's only-begotten Son to inherit the kingdom of God, then there's no way God can give it to you. The gospel is his plan to save you through faith in Lord Yeshua Christ. But if you reject Yeshua as the way, the truth, and the life, then you obviously reject God, and won't mind if he rejects you. Hopefully you will accept the truth before it is too late, so your sins can be forgiven. For there is a place where the fire is not quenched, and the worm dies not. Christ has saved us from that fate, if you believe in him.

This is how my seven-year-old daughter talks. ``If you don't buy me a pony I'll run away from home and join the circus and then you'll be sorry...''

Besides, when the Lamb of God returns in glory I'll be too busy sh*tting myself to be sorry, just like everyone else :)

Best wishes

What about the earth being flat, epilisy is demon possesion, mold being and evil force (Leviticus) and many others!

If the Bible says the earth is flat, that before creation all that existed was darkness upon the waters, that mold is an evil force, epilepsy and mental illness are forms of demon possession, that women are to remain submissive to their husbands and are worth only 3/5 the value of men and that we are to stone our disobedient children to death -- then the earth is flat, before creation all that existed was darkness upon the waters, mold is an evil force, epilepsy and mental illness are forms of demon possession, women are to remain submissive to their husbands and are worth only 3/5 of the value of men, and we are to stone our disobedient children to death.

Surely you aren't one of those heathen lieberals who believes that God expects us to use the intelligence He gave us to evaluate what Scripture is actually trying to say, are you? ;)

Are you OK? I put a thread about it on the UK forum.

Yes, thanks, Although the first blast was forceful enough to shake my son out of bed. Happily, these old houses were built to last. But you've no idea how much a three-million-gallon oil tank exploding in your back yard sounds like the Last Trump. My first thought was ``I'm not ready!!'' :)

Best wishes
