If the original language (Hebrew or Greek) says "lion", then the translator has decided to change the text to suit his own interpretation. I think that using "lion" is more powerful, because of the contrast between the two animals. The lion is "the king of the beast" and depicts power, ferocity and dignity that is quite the opposite of the lamb which depicts helplessness and vulnerability. The verse juxtaposes the two to show the peacefulness within the animal world where even enemies can be at peace with one another when Jesus is reigning over the world. Using the wolf is not as powerful and so the contrast is not so prominent.

"And the wolf will dwell with the lamb,
And the leopard will lie down with the kid,
And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little boy will lead them.
Also the cow and the bear will graze;
Their young will lie down together
And the lion will eat straw like the ox.
And the nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra,
And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper's den.
They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain,
For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the seas." - NASV, 1978

Different translations drastically change things to suit their own agenda. You do realize different translations exist right?

The best translation is the Doauy Rheims Bible, a great direct word for word translation of Saint Jerome's Latin Vulgate which is without error.

Wish I could track down the quote, perhaps from a book on the reformation, but the wolves I was warned about are the priesthood of the the RCC and an image of the Orthodox church ones would have them sleeping. apologies @Wolfe

I wasn't aware it was ever a lion in the first place. I understood it to have been a wolf all along. Unless I'm mistaken, the song "Peace in the Valley" which says "the lion shall lie down by the lamb" did a misquote. That happens often with biblical expressions, kind of like "money is the root of all evil," "pride goeth before a fall," and "spare the rod, spoil the child," all of which are incorrect.

Perhaps you were confusing that verse with this one?

Isaiah 65:25 The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain,” says the Lord.

The Hebrew word translated "wolf" in the OP is zee'ev. זְאֵב (H2061)
It means yellow. It is used 7 times in the OT and the KJV in all instances translates it as wolf.

The word commonly translated "lion" is k'feer כְּפִיר (H3715)
It refers to the mane. It occurs 32 times and is translated lion 30.

From the Targum Isaiah. The pre-Christian Aramaic translation and the 225 BC, Septuagint.
Targum Isaiah 11:6 In the days of the Messiah of Israel peace shall be multiplied in the earth. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall dwell with the kid ; and the calf, and the lion, and the fatling together ; and a little sucking child shall be leading them.
LXX Isaiah 11:6 And the wolf shall feed with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the young calf and bull and lion shall feed together; and a little child shall lead them.

Isaiah 11:6 "And the lion shall lay down with the lamb" is now "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb."

lion_wolf_lamb.jpg

Hi chainbreaker,

Let's break one now. I clicked on the verse link attached to your post and there's not a single one that is written that the lion shall lie with the lamb. I also went over to biblestudytools and did a 'compare' of Isaiah 11:6 and there's not a single translation that is written that the lion shall lie with the lamb. Post #12 has many of the currently available translations of Isaiah 11:6 copied over.

So, my question: What translation are you using that says the lion shall lie with the lamb?

God bless you,
In Christ, ted
