Obviously. That's why I said it's beyond me that anyone can like it, as in, the way I look at music is so different from his that it's impossible for me to see how he could find a song like that good. Personally, I like songs with many layers playing at the same time, so that you get a nice complicated textured wall of sound, and a lot of different melodies playing at once, which gives a song a lot more identity (more unique). I also hate predictable and unoriginal music (about 99% of what is played on the radio is horribly predictable). For me, listening to music should be a journey. I like songs that shift in all kinds of directions (but in a way that the song is a closely tied together unity), that have lots of different atmospheres and masterful transitions. The songs that I like best are the songs that I get confused by when I first listen to them. For me, awesome songs take a level of understanding to be able to enjoy them. The structure of the song and the direction it's heading should not be clear the first time I listen to it. That's why I never get tired of my favorite songs, it takes me 3-10 listens to fully appreciate them, and another 50 or so to discover all the hidden details. If I listen to a pop album or a rap album, I'll get tired of every song on it about 1 minute into the song. I don't like repetition and simplicity in music. I also like musical skill in music, that is, artists playing their instruments with adepcy. You don't hear that in 99% of radio music. Either it's just loops or simple electronics on the background, or instruments being used as a background, played in a way that anyone could play it after picking up the instrument and practising for 2 weeks - a month. The only person that has a little bit of talent in most radio music, is the singer, and even this singing, is often enhanced by fancy studio tools. I also dislike artists who don't write their own music/lyrics. What are they then, but an icon to make sure the music sells?

I never called Eminem a bad rapper. I just called Lose Yourself a bad song, probably because in general I think rap is horrendous. Eminem is one of the few that I can stand a little bit. Anyways, you shouldn't be so convinced that the others on this forum know nothing about music, and you do. If your favorite genre is rap, and your favorite artist is Eminem, then I think it's safe to say you know very little about music, even about your favorite genre. My experience has learned me that the best artists, and this goes for all genres, are usually not known in the mainstream. Eminem is one of the best known rappers atm. The people that are experimenting and creating original music, bending the barriers of the genre, are the people that have to work day jobs while making their music, and that will usually never get famous (there are some exceptions, but few). Mainstream cannot stand music that is ahead of its time, that experiments outside a "generally accepted boundary". People have become adapted to the same old boring crap, and are afraid of anything that is too complicated, or too unique. It sounds weird to them, and they often don't understand the music, because they have been exposed to the same thing again and again during their lives, making anything different sound bad. I started out listening to Limp Bizkit and Korn and I thought it was the best thing in the world. Boy, was I wrong. The music I love the most today sounded really weird and confusing years ago when I listened to it, because I was not used to it. I could have done 2 things, give up and go back to my mainstream stuff, or continue to listen to this new stuff that I couldn't quite wrap my head around, find out more about it on the internet, and see what all the fuss was about. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I now appreciate music more than ever, on a completely different level than I did before. Years ago, I couldn't have imagined how strong an emotional impact music could have. Now I know. I'm glad I jumped the barrier. Maybe you should too? Check out the internet, look for rap groups you don't know about and never hear on the radio, that are said to be doing something different, something unique, something progressive. Who knows, you might discovere a whole new side to music?
Word!HAHAHA!! So I know very little about music just because my favorite rapper is "Mainstream"? There are lots of people whose favorite rapper is Eminem and they know a lot about music. I hate people who all the time say all mainstream music sucks, because not all of it does. But yes, I do listen to some underground rappers, Canibus, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def to name a few. And how is Lose Yourself a bad song? It has meaning in its lyrics which a lot of todays rap songs dont. Popularity does not always = talentless. I hate how people all the time say "Oh, they stink just cuz theyre mainstream" Its a lame argument, imo. Why are some music artists popular? Oh I don't know, maybe because they have TALENT and MANY people LIKE their MUSIC? If they didn't have talent, than they WOULDN'T be POPULAR. They'd be living in A BOX in the street, or bagging groceries at your nearest grocery store, not becoming a music star, if they didn't have talent. Yes, there are some good underground less-popular artists but theyre hard to find and I wouldn't know where to look anyway. See, I can write long posts too. Beat that.

I find it to have very little musical value. Repetitive, unoriginal, simple. Not for me. Meaning in lyrics means very little if the actual music has little to offer. And even then, I don't really find the lyrics to be that good at all. Besides, remember: music taste is subjective. And how is Lose Yourself a bad song? Most mainstream artists have no skill at all at playing their instruments, or composing. Pop music is very simple, almost always the same song structures (verse chorus verse etc...), very predictable, the same kinds of chords and beats used over and over again. They usually have just one talented person and that's the singer, and even then, often it is the computer tools that do the work, and it shows in a live setting. A lot of mainstream artists don't even write their own songs. Becoming popular in the mainstream is much more about image, looks, what's trendy, advertising etc... then it is about talent. There are a few exceptions, but like I said, a few. Most people on the planet don't have time to do research on music and just let the media and friends guide them, they also don't want music to actually fully listen to it, they just want sometime as background music for a party, to dance on, or for in the car during driving or during work etc... That's about the only thing that most mainstream music is good for. Almost all of it lacks depth, complexity, atmosphere, originality, and progressiveness. I'd say mainstream music is music for people that don't have time for music, or are ignorant of what other music is out there in the world.Popularity does not always = talentless. Yeah, saying you wouldn't know where to look is just lame. I don't know where to look for good music so I'm just gonna listen to what MTV and BET feed me.There are heaps and heaps of excellent underground artists, and they aren't that hard to find. Use the internet, it works! You are looking at the tip of an iceberg.
