I was just watching The Filth and the Fury (the Sex Pistols documentary) when something came to me. I've always hated the Beatles, yet they're always held up as these musical geniuses who revolutionized rock and roll. Am I the only one who honestly hates their music?
You watch something on the Sex Pistols and you reliese you hate the Beatles.

Do you own any Beatles albums? Sounds like you dont.
Go listen to Sgt. Peppers or Revolver or Abby Road or Let it Be.

The Beatles won the last battle of the bands that was done here, and that speaks for itself.

Yeah , they are a bit overrated... but their music is catchy and that's what keeps the love of them going... you can listen to the Beatles at any time, they have a song for every mood... they're not musical geniuses like members of some other bands (like Brian May etc) but they write good songs and they are the most successful band ever... not quite sure how they managed it
Having said that, they're good and i like them...

Especially compared to The Who and the Stones, I didn't find the music to be that good...thier actual music was nothing to write home about
There's not much I like more than three chord rock and roll.
This seems sort of contradictory, doesn't it? You don't think the Beatles were all that talented musically, but you really like three chord punk and rock & roll. Granted, bands like the Ramones were seeking to bring rock back to it's roots, but in all honesty, they weren't really the most talented musicicans.

The Rollings Stones had some material that was pretty similar to the Beatles; however, I think the Beatles did a lot more exploration in their music than the Stones did. The early Beatles stuff was more upbeat, but they later experimented in other genres and with different instrumentation. You mentioned the Who also. I think the Who and the Clash are very underrated when it comes to this stuff. The Who made use of some of the new technology (synths, etc.) and in a non-pretentious way fused in that sound into their music (see: synth intro on Won't Get Fooled Again). They also did alot of albums are conceptual things, which up to that point had not been done too much. The Clash is sort of similar (and they were influenced a fair amount by the Who) in that they saw the punk stuff that people like the Ramones were doing and the built on that so it included other genres. They fuse punk, rock, reggae, dance, jazz, and even disco (see: the magnificent seven).

And for the record, I love all of the bands mentioned above.

They talked about the Beatles a lot in the movie, so it made me think of it. And please don't assume I've never heard the Beatles. I've heard most of their albums and hits because my parents raised me on that sort of music. Also, just becase they one the battle of the bands doesn't mean they're good. They're just overrated.

As for the contradiction between me not thinking the Beatles were talented and me liking three chord rock and roll, it's actually very simple. The Beatles wrote pretenious and sometimes complicated music that was still nothing special. The Ramones, for example, played very simple music but played it well. I don't care how simple the music is, you have to be a pretty decent band to play 20 whole songs in 26 minutes without messing up. And bear in mind, these same songs would run to about 2:30 on albums as opposed to the 1:05 or so that they were played in during concerts.

Side Note: Magnificant Seven is a wonderful song.

That's what I've always thought, too. There are a few moments where they break out of their mediocrity, but not many.

Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they didn't do a lot for rock music.
It's just a matter of taste. I like the Beatles, they're an anytime band for me. But they're not the best, that's obvious.

The Stones are just good old rock 'n' roll. And the Beatles are about as good as it gets, folks...so I think it's hard to overrate them. They wrote catchy, original, and varied tunes. Whether you like them or not, their tunes were revolutionary for popular music. Blackwasp used to be a big anti-Beatles fool. I don't know if he'll admit it. A lot of people who don't like the Beatles end up liking them, after they give them an honest and comprehensive listen.

I will say this for them: they could write great melodies. That's maybe their only real major contribution, IMO.

Blackwasp used to be a big anti-Beatles fool. I don't know if he'll admit it.

Hahaha... I never talked to him during that period. I still remember when I first came here, and hated on the Beatles quite a bit more than I do now, and I bet I made him more than a little angry at times ;) . He was hardcore about the Beatles then; he'd come and say things like "The Beatles are without any doubt, objectively the greatest band of all time, and anyone who disagrees is fooling themselves," and I'd just shake my head. I've beaten at least a little sense into him now :D

A lot of people who don't like the Beatles end up liking them, after they give them an honest and comprehensive listen.

I've actually grown to like the Beatles a little more than I used to. I used to actively dislike them, because I thought (and still think) that they were overrated. Now that I don't go into comparing bands that much, since it's usually useless, I've stopped worrying about it. I like listening to the Beatles sometimes, so it's cool. But I still can't say that I see any merit to thinking they're the greatest, or even one of the greats.

Yeah, I think that was their strongest point, no doubt. But then again, they had some great songs instrumentally too..."Helter Skelter", "Strawberry Fields Forever", and "I Am the Walrus" come to mind.

Ahh, how people change. I've learned of the err in my ways; now I believe that I'm the only person granted with perfect music tastes. If anyone wants to know the correct order of the best bands/albums of all time, give me a PM. :p

Oh, and Jedick, until you admit that Joanna Newsom's voice is beautiful, your insensitive attacks won't hurt me. ;)

Blackwasp:

Argh! The very fact that you once spoke surely that the Beatles were garbage probably suggests that your newfound confidence in your taste is premature.

Ranking is kinda stupid when it comes to music, being that different tunes are appropriate for different times/moods. But I've told you that countless times.

I feel like a failed master. You still have much to learn, young one. :)

Hmm... :p = sarcasm.

I believe as strongly as one can in the subjectivity of music.

what many fail to remember is the MASSIVE impact the Beatles had on millions of people , and the Cyclonic effect the had on thousands of rock bands then and since ........... it is difficicult to really appreciate their explosive ideas until you hear artists like Brian May and Ozzy Osbourne ..... etc

Brian and Roger were given an award a few years back on behalf of Queen , the guy with the mic said "you have out-done The Beatles" to which Brian responded "no one out does The Beatles"

and many times when Ozzy is interviewed he states over again The Beatles made him want to get into Rock and Roll , he is a huge fan....

in retrospect will "your" music/band be thought of as anything except ordinary in years to come ......... maybe not ;)

Gotta go a bus to catch

"Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.

Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

Ah.................

Alright, I love The Beatles. Without them there is no rock & roll. I don't see how you can truly appreciate musical genious without giving The Beatles tons of credit. They put out great music at a very fast rate...like 2 albums a year. And all of it was influential and/or groundbreaking at the time.
Without the Beatles, we still had the Elvis, the Who, and the Stones. Rock would be alive and better than it is now.

Listenening to The Beatles songs is one thing, but hearing them played live is another. The last 2 years in Adelaide, South Australia, we have had a Beatle festival, this year at our own Cavern Club - which is fab!

Hearing "Beatle" bands playing Beatle songs is really something! Pearl Jam and many, many others have covered and performed Beatle songs. BUT, remember they were designed for the early to mid 60's. If they were around now they would have been innovated and progressive like they were back then.
I also like the Stones and have seen them twice and Led Zep - seen once and the Who who!! I would love to see (especially performing "Boris the Spider"!!!!)
