  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Beatles? Boring?

C'mon, people. Even if you aren't a big fan, you have to at least admit that they were good musicians. And even if you don't like alot of their songs, you have to admit that they created some songs that were legitimately innovative. And if you are really being honest, you have to admit that they were terrific pop songwriters. It may not be your thing, but to say that their music is objectively boring is being a tad naive.

And as I've said before: Revolver and Rubber Soul are about as close to a perfect album as you can get, and Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper are perfect with the exception of one or two songs.

I would agree that they're overrated in the sense that a lot of people cite the Beatles as influences or whatever without really knowing what they're talking about. Just cuz you've heard "Hard Day's Night" and "Yesterday" and love them both doesn't mean that when you get to be a huge pop star you can call them "major inspirations".

However, I don't believe they are really overrated in the sense that they are as good as their given credit for by people who do know what they're tlaking about. It's hard to see their charm and originality nowadays since their style has been repackaged (the same for bands like the Stones, the Who, etc) and resold to us about a thousand times over.

Listen to their transition stuff like Rubber Soul and Revolver, and keep in mind that in 1965, (virtually) no one was making music like that and constantly expanding on the limits of popular music. I think most people who dislike the Beatles have heard some of their really early stuff only, and haven't taken the time to expand their knowledge. I used to think Abbey Road was overrated...then I listened to it.

I would like to know what about the Beatles' music makes it so unique that "no one else was making music like that." I've heard so many people say that, and I just can't find it in the albums -- and I have heard all their later work.

Regardless of anyone's misgivings regarding the Beatles, I think we must all agree on one point; that their influence on rock n roll and indeed all mainstream music of the later twentieth century was pivotal, revolutionary and iconic. That is to say, although many underground movements were experimenting and advancing years before the Beatles began to 'psychedelize,' the fact that the Beatles, so great a force in popular music at the time, began experimenting in their music was enough to get the message of experimentation out to the general public. Indeed, the fact that the most popular band in the world at the time was doing such remarkably strange things with their music was sort of a means of legitimizing experimentation for other bands.

Things such as the introduction of the sitar, feedback, reversed sounds, tape loops, warped strings, etc. to popular music allowed the general public to be informed about this new 'sound' as well as to inspire many bands to continue this work in their own way. King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and the Who come to mind when I think of groups which began diversifying remarkably and entering into mainstream consciousness following the groundwork that the Beatles laid out throughout their career.

Love and peace,

-Justin

edit: Not that Jimi Hendrix or the Who were exactly unknown while the Beatles were at their height :sorry:
