  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was just watching The Filth and the Fury (the Sex Pistols documentary) when something came to me. I've always hated the Beatles, yet they're always held up as these musical geniuses who revolutionized rock and roll. Am I the only one who honestly hates their music?

I don't hate the Beatles. In fact, I like them a whole lot. I just think they are HORRIBLY overrated.

The Beatles may be overrated, but c'mon people, they're far better than you are making them out to be.

Sgt. Pepper is an amazing record (with the exception of one or two songs). Revolver, Rubber Soul, and the White Album are about as close to perfect as you can get. They took other styles and fused them together and made some pretty innovative music. They also inspired Brian Wilson to write Pet Sounds, which is quite possibly one of the greatest pop records ever written; after Pet Sounds influenced them, and they created "Strawberry Fields Forever", Brian Wilson wrote SMiLE, which is another one of the best pop records of all-time (it's just about perfect in my opinion). So not only did they create amazing records, but they influenced equally amazing records. They challenged others to push boundaries, while they did.

Musically, Paul McCartney is one of the best rock bassists of that era, George Harrison and John Lennon were both very talented guitarists. Lennon/McCartney were both great songwriters (for the most part, although it seems their solo material is a bit lacking). And Ringo...had a cool name.

Sure, they may be terribly overrated. Sure, the Kinks may have been just as good as them, but are hardly remembered at all today. But I think they deserve more credit than you are giving them.

uhhhhhhhhhh it was actually pet sounds that inspired sgt. pepper.
I know. But Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds, if I am not mistaken. I'm pretty sure Brian Wilson has said that in a few different interviews. Rubber Soul --> Pet Sounds --> Sgt. Pepper --> Wilson starts writing SMiLE, hears Strawberry Fields Forever on the radio -->Wilson continues working on SMiLE, abandons SMiLE for a long time, then releases it and it's a masterpiece. That's how Wilson talks about it on the SMiLE documentary at least.

is Smile really that good? i never heard it. Although I DO own a copy of the LP "Smiley Smile" Brians most hated of his works. lol
Maybe the whole story has something to do with the album's allure, but I love it. In my opinion, the only downside to the whole album is that Brian's vocals aren't what they used to be. He sings alright, but I think his earlier vocals were a lot better.

SMiLE is sort of experimental in some ways. But just the fact that everything you are listening to Brian had all planned out in his mind as he was doing the modular recording of it is sort of mindblowing. The lyrics are all Van Dyke Parks poetry, so it is interesting songwriting. The songs themselves are all little vignettes and stories, personal and general. "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" basically is a complete orchestra mimicking the sound of a fire and fire engines and sirens. And the whole album flows beautifully from one song to the other (case in point: the intro harmonies which flow right into the beginning of "Heroes and Villains" grab your attention right away).

I think if you like Pet Sounds, then you'd probably enjoy SMiLE, although it did take me a few listens to really fall in love with the album. The DVD is really interesting too. It has a documentary about the Beach Boys and the making of SMiLE and has footage from the opening night when people heard it for the first time after waiting for thirty years. The DVD made me appreciate the album even more. The album is definitely worth checking out though, if you haven't heard it.

i used to dislike the beatles. i thought they were overrated. when i thought of the beatles, i thought "twist and shout! (twist and shout)"

and i didn't really know about the diversity found on their later albums. i really appreciate their ability to make great bluesy songs, and some silly songs, and music with foreign influences. They were well before their time. Back in the 60's there was other good music, but i can't think of any other 60's bands that brought so many different elements, and so many different emotions. The beatles cannot be represented by 1 song. They have dabbled in so many different things, and they've done them well. I love other other bands that are more single-minded- like zeppelin, for example. Zeppelin was a GREAT band. Instrumentally, they were powerful. They wrote a ton of great songs. But they definatley had "their sound".

listen to Obladi-Oblada, Happiness is a warm gun, piggies, helter skelter, Revolution 1, and then tell me another 60's band that had more of an exploring, curious diversity, ALL ON ONE ALBUM.

and i'll also say this- the white album isn't even my favorite. Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, and Revolver are equally as sweet.

i love the beatles. not because everyone else does too... but because they are so influential to me. I am seriously tripping out on the beatles right now. in the last week, probably about 60% of my music listening has been of the beatles.

See, this is where people get annoyed by me. Especially compared to The Who and the Stones, I didn't find the music to be that good. I found their lyrics to be average at best, and their actual music was nothing to write to home about. As far as I'm concerned, they' responsible merely for the eventual explosion of boy bands. That's why I like punk. It took rock away from bands like the Beatles and brought it back to its roots. There's not much I like more than three chord rock and roll.

I loooove the Beatles, and I really like the Beach Boys. "Penny Lane", "Hey Jude", and "Eleanor Rigby" are some of the best songs written, in my opinion. And "God Only Knows" is one of the best loves songs too.

Eleanor Rigby is one the best songs ever recorded-and that's when you take away the singing, and just listen to cellos :)
