Speaking of shoo-fy pie, here's my favorite recipe, from the More with Less Cookbook:

Preheat oven to 375º.
Prepare 1 unbaked 9" pie shell.
Cut together with a pastry blender:
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 T. shortening or margarine
Reserve 1/2 c. crumbs for topping.
Combine in mixing bowl:
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 3/4 c. cold water
  • 1 t. soda in
  • 1/4 c. hot water
Add crumb mixture and beat together. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Sprinkle reserved 1/2 c. crumbs on top. Bake 35 minutes.

I use butter instead of margarine.

I recommend Grandma's Molasses for this recipe. It is darker and richer than sulphured molasses, but not quite as strong as blackstrap. It doesn't have so much of that sorghum flavor.

Shoo-fly pie is best served warm with milk or coffee.

Nope. Are you? You are quite right in noticing its resemblance to southern chess pies and pecan pies, but it's Pennsylvania Dutch.

Not that I'm Pennsylvania Dutch, either. But my heritage is Mennonite. I'm from California.

But come, sit down, have a piece of pie (> and a cup of coffee (_)D

I'm sorry that piece of pie is so little. Have another (> :)

I guess we'll have to find out a little more about what we Anabaptists and Pennsylvania Dutch have in common with y'all Southern Babdists. ;)
LOL. I"m a "southern" Baptist..but not a SOUTHERN Baptist a.k.a. (SBC). How confusing this can all get.

Thanks, Kristi, for sticking this thread. Maybe it will help us remember to be more neighborly.

You've worked hard today. Sit down and have a piece of shoofly pie (>

Would you like a cup of coffee or a glass of milk with that?

...

Oh, Nehemiah, I notice your plate is empty. What can I get you?
