  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just for a clarification of definations as these two are often confused.... ;)

Torah = Pentatuch - the first 5 books of the Bible

Talmud = Mishna + Gemara - a compilation of legal decisions and commentary based on the Instructions of HaShem in the Torah :)

The first 3 posts were speaking specifically about Torah ;)

To me, the talmud is what's called commentary, not actual books from the bible. It makes much more sense to observe Paul's teaching than to observe the talmud. But whatever, that's just what I believe.

Thanks for the link. Sounds interesting so I'll check it out.:)

Nope, no confusion. You were just saying that paul's letters where commentary. I was pointing out that commentary would be something more like the talmud, not actual books of the bible in my opinion.:)

What exactly are the Mishna and Gemara?

I've heard those terms before, but have no idea what they actually mean.

Mishna is the Oral Tradition - the Halakah or legal case determinations made by the rabbis on numerous issues of Torah obedience accumulated over the centuries and transmitted orally from generation of teachers to generation - it was finally codified/written down by Judah HaNissi a few hundered years after the Roman Dispersion - for fear that the knowledge would be lost as the Jewish people were spread far and wide and aging rabbis often had no one to whom to teach the oral traditions.

The Gemara is a compliation of commentaries on on the Mishna.

Together these are called Talmud

See below - a page of Talmud.....
In the center is the Mishna on a particular topic - around it are several layers of commentary or Gemara - these layers are actually "discussions" rabbis living centuries apart would have concerning this portion of the Mishna -- the entire Talmud is thus......
