  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Since the thread was closed before I got a chance to respond, I just wanted to get a chance to say thanks for all the responses. Although I think I left the computer logged into the thread until late last night, I wasn't at the computer, and I didn't read the responses until this morning a few moments before dropping my daughter off at school. When I got back, the thread was closed. I hope my silence wasn't interpreted as rudeness.

I have no problems with this being closed now as well. I just didn't want to just blow everyone off.

I didn't get a chance to respond to that thread, but, not only do we consider Mary all those things, we also title her "Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix.” [Catechism of the Catholic Church, 969]. We also consider her Queen of heaven and spouse of the Holy Spirit. And not only that, the Catechism also says that through her intercessions, "Mary continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation".

That should give you enough to chew on now. :)

Whoa, what?

"This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfilment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation .... Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix." 512 970 "Mary's function as mother of men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power. But the Blessed Virgin's salutary influence on men . . . flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on his mediation, depends entirely on it, and draws all its power from it." 513 "No creature could ever be counted along with the Incarnate Word and Redeemer; but just as the priesthood of Christ is shared in various ways both by his ministers and the faithful, and as the one goodness of God is radiated in different ways among his creatures, so also the unique mediation of the Redeemer does not exclude but rather gives rise to a manifold cooperation which is but a sharing in this one source." [CCC, 969]

Oh, okay. I don't understand, but I accept it.

Letalis,
Pray to Mary often so that she may adopt you as her child. When you do, you will begin to see how she helps bring the world closer to her Son, and you will begin to develope a very deep love for her though this.

In Christ through Mary,

-Davide

Are you saying that Catholics don't regard reception into the Catholic Church alone as grounds for Mary being one's mother? You seem to be implying that Mary is only the mother of those in the Catholic Church who specifically and frequently ask her to be. Am I misunderstanding you?

Christ told us to ask and we shall receive. We as Catholics must get into the habit of asking Mary for her help, otherwise we are missing out on her powerfull intercessions, which can bring us into a *much* deeper union with her Son. Being Catholic we have a complete family in heaven, but if we don't pray to our family we are only "children" by title only and are neglecting the help that our Mother can bring us through her Son.
