  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Texas first grader traumatized by poster of "different colored children holding hands"; school trustee works to remove such 'ideology' from classrooms

I don't see where the child said what was disturbing about it. A six year-old could be bothered by an image without it having anything to do with whatever message it is conveying. An image of a bunch of dismembered hands, like the one shown in post #4, might just simply look creepy to a six year-old.

Asked for an example of a complaint, Dungan cited “a poster that shows ‘all belong here’ with racially colored hands (this is an example that was first brought to me early this year) where I think the intention of the poster was good, and I think the parent thought the intention of the poster was good.

“However the unintended consequences of that poster made the first grader be like ‘wait, why wouldn’t I be accepted here?’ It had a reverse effect on the first grader because it was in the classroom.”

I have no idea what the actual poster looked like, but as an example, this meets the general description (as uttered by the trustee) fairly well:

We still have no idea what the poster looked like, and that doesn't even fit the description of "holding hands."

Conroe ISD trustee argues displays of racial inclusivity and pride in classrooms should be removed

One trustee says a child was traumatized by a poster showing different colored children holding hands and had to switch classrooms.

Dungan [the trustee] wouldn't say whether she found that poster objectionable, just that she wants to avoid "situations like that" by having the board adopt stricter standards and adhere to state policies already in place, prohibiting teachers from displaying political items not relevant to curriculum.

A fairly useless news story of a fairly inane meeting. Nobody at the meeting actually knew what they were talking about, nor did the news reporters know what anyone at the meeting was talking about.

"We heard that someone said that their child was 'traumatized' (the current buzzword that everyone is glomming onto) by a barely described poster which we never saw."

Conroe ISD Trustee Melissa Dungan wants fellow board members to enforce district policies and state laws to keep personal ideologies out of classrooms and limit flags on campus to the American flag, Texas flag, school flags and college pendants.

During the board’s Aug. 1 special meeting, Dungan said she has received numerous complaints from parents about different items displayed in classrooms.

“When children are told what and how to believe whether it verbal, in writing or through visual symbols, they miss out on the freedom to think for themselves and use the skills they are learning in the classroom,” she said.

Dungan said the display of personal ideologies, such as the Pride flag, is a growing trend in schools and should be addressed including potentially enhancing existing school policies.

While we're talking about a poster of children of various races holding hands, let's taint that discussion with the "sexualizing children" issue so we can agree to ban it.

These are very different issues.

I had considered that it might have been exactly the opposite.

If a child was raised in a fine Christian home that is color blind; and in the 1st grade he is traumatized by a Liberal message that harps on racial division in America; I can understand why his parents might be offended.

We still don't know what the poster portrayed or what its real message was.

That's because you are not looking at the Left's real target with the race card in schools... the non-White parents.
We still don't know what the poster portrayed or what its real message was.

A fairly useless news story of a fairly inane meeting.
That particular comment may have been inane, but this trustee is making an effort to change the rules of what teachers can post in their classrooms based on a claimed event that no one can properly evaluate.

Granted.

That description was written by a reporter in the OP article. In the article in your quote, the direct quote from the trustee is: Dungan cited “a poster that shows ‘all belong here’ with racially colored hands"

i.e., holding hands was not part of what the trustee said.

As an intelligence analyst, I would go so far as to ask the question: Did the incident even happen?
I consider that as well, but if this conservative trustee wanted to invent a pretext for banning 'unapproved' posters in classrooms, surely she could have come up with a better lie.

Which poster? The poster in the classroom--which we don't know--or the one essentialsaltes presented that is irrelevant to the discussion?
I dont think it matters.

The point is to imagine a poster thats replete with shocking marxism.

We didn't hear what she actually said in the video. The text indicates two separate times that she said "holding hands."

So, we don't know what she said she heard. We don't know what she actually heard. We don't know what the people she heard from actually said. We don't know what those people's children claimed they were traumatized by.

That equals: No information.

Neither we nor anyone involved knows what they're talking about...but everyone has an opinion about what should be done.

Shirley probably could have, but this woman wasn't Shirley.

That's what forums are for no? Expressing opinions...even when the provided information is 2nd hand.

IMO, the real story here is why did a school trustee raise this concern without showing the offending poster?

You can do so at around 3:30:40

Conroe ISD Board of Trustees Special Meeting - August 1, 2023

If you listen on, the conservative trustees move on to political posters (including rainbows) and the Superintendent jumps in to say (paraphrasing) there's already Texas laws about that, and I have those things taken down right away in our schools. So thank heavens for that.
