  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Conroe ISD trustee argues displays of racial inclusivity and pride in classrooms should be removed

One trustee says a child was traumatized by a poster showing different colored children holding hands and had to switch classrooms.

Dungan [the trustee] wouldn't say whether she found that poster objectionable, just that she wants to avoid "situations like that" by having the board adopt stricter standards and adhere to state policies already in place, prohibiting teachers from displaying political items not relevant to curriculum.

When asked if bible verses were also in violation of existing policy and should be removed, Dungan struggled to respond.

"Right? Would you agree?" trustee Datren Williams asked Dungan.

"I don't know," Dungan replied.

I wonder what the poster was.

Asked for an example of a complaint, Dungan cited “a poster that shows ‘all belong here’ with racially colored hands (this is an example that was first brought to me early this year) where I think the intention of the poster was good, and I think the parent thought the intention of the poster was good.

“However the unintended consequences of that poster made the first grader be like ‘wait, why wouldn’t I be accepted here?’ It had a reverse effect on the first grader because it was in the classroom.”

I have no idea what the actual poster looked like, but as an example, this meets the general description (as uttered by the trustee) fairly well:

adhere to state policies already in place, prohibiting teachers from displaying political items not relevant to curriculum.
Conroe ISD Trustee Melissa Dungan wants fellow board members to enforce district policies and state laws to keep personal ideologies out of classrooms and limit flags on campus to the American flag, Texas flag, school flags and college pendants.

During the board’s Aug. 1 special meeting, Dungan said she has received numerous complaints from parents about different items displayed in classrooms.

“When children are told what and how to believe whether it verbal, in writing or through visual symbols, they miss out on the freedom to think for themselves and use the skills they are learning in the classroom,” she said.

Dungan said the display of personal ideologies, such as the Pride flag, is a growing trend in schools and should be addressed including potentially enhancing existing school policies.

But we don’t know. And we really don’t know that anyone was actually traumatized.

We don't. Nevertheless, whether it's real or imaginary, it was cited as a pretext for exerting even more of a chilling effect on teacher autonomy in their classroom displays -- "to avoid 'situations like that'". Whatever that might actually be.

All you need now is an example of children being told what to believe (other than in church).

I went to Liberal public schools in a Liberal state. I have countless examples of Leftist indoctrination. Fortunately I escaped their oppression, and found refuge in a place where people think like I do.

You're not paying attention
I'm not either; because the poster that you presented is not the poster in question.

It's like looking for a fight; when one doesn't even know what he's fighting for.

Children are being indoctrinated to believe people of all races can be Americans.
Its the indoctrination thats problematic.

When I was in grade school in Canada they indoctrinated us into saying "please" and "thank you" and so on. Fortunately that sort of mind control wont fly in America. Freedom!

I described the poster as it was described by the hostile school trustee.
...and by your own admission: (Drum roll please.) "I have no idea what the actual poster looked like"

For all you know it could have looked more like this:

Aside from that, I see that you haven't disclosed what political message was behind it.

So in other words you don't know?
Please inform me what other possible meaning “I have no idea what the actual poster looked like” might have other than your fine restatement.
